Riley Elf Mk II Saloon (RHD)

Finished in an elegant Silver Birch over Raven Black colour combination
The upmarket, plush version of the original Mini
One of the final models produced by iconic British marque Riley
Beautiful restored example of an exceedingly rare British classic
The Riley motor company was one of the most respected marques in the UK, starting in 1890 producing bicycles before soon branching into the world of automobiles. Their cars were amongst the finest Sports models of the 1930s with their most desirable models worth hundreds of thousands with styling more akin to contemporary Alfa Romeo’s than most British cars and performance credentials to boot, such as many Mille Miglia entries.
It was in the 1950s that Riley found itself absorbed into BMC and it was from here that the Riley Elf and its slightly less high-spec sister, the Wolseley Hornet. Developed from the instant icon that was Alec Issigonis’ masterpiece the Mini, the Riley Elf featured different front and more importantly rear bodywork than the original car. The front housed an upright chrome-grille flanked by two smaller side-grilles whilst the rear was shaped entirely differently, featuring a longer tail with fins and a larger boot, increasing the practicality of the Riley over the Mini. These features were complimented with extra brightwork such as a chrome strip on the bonnet and around the waistline as well as larger front and rear bumpers with overriders giving the car a far more premium feel.
The interior featured a similar luxurious treatment, fitted with a full walnut dashboard with two glove compartments and leather seats, one could easily mistake the cabin for one from a ridiculously cool Radford DeVille, a car which doubtless would’ve cost several times the price new of the Riley and even more today. What is also retained from the classic Mini is the fun driving experience, the Riley truly builds upon the Mini concept in a far more upmarket package, now all the rage in the compact car sector but near unheard-of in the early 1960s.
The car we proudly present to you today is a particularly elegant example that has benefitted from a recent restoration and is a real cut above the rest. Finished in Raven Black with a Silver Birch roof over a sumptuous Burgundy leather interior, if it weren’t for its size, one wouldn’t think they were climbing into a small city car, a department where the Riley lacks in size as it should and yet has boundless cabin space, impressive both then and even now.
This is a really unique opportunity to push the envelope and go beyond the classic Mini in a car with all the Mini’s genius and quirks but with even more practicality and regular usability. Not to be missed.
