BMW X3 2.0 XDRIVE20D SE 5d 181 BHP

BMW has built a reputation for building cars that are engaging to drive and that even extends to its off-road models. However, the first-generation X3 was the exception to that rule: it wasn't much fun on the road and it wasn't much cop off it. On the tarmac the ride was lumpy due to the overly stiff suspension and you couldn't guarantee that it would be able to negotiate muddy slopes and rutted terrain like a Land Rover Freelander. However, BMW has improved the second generation - the suspension has been reworked to be a little more forgiving but thankfully the car still corners well. There is plenty of kit on the X3 to protect you in the event of an accident. Front, side and curtain airbags have been fitted for the front seat occupants and head airbags for the second row. BMW X3 safety is boosted by crash-active headrests at the front, crash sensors that prime the safety systems if it thinks an accident is imminent, a tyre defect indicator, anti-lock brakes, traction control, cornering brake control, dynamic brake control, hill-start assistant, hill descent control as standard. Larger, wider and taller, the X3 is now more practical. Load space has been improved by 70 litres taking the maximum figure with seats in place to 550 litres. Fold the back row of seats and the luggage space expands to 1,600 litres. The X3 has got one over on its rivals with its flexibility. The seats have a 60/40 split as standard but there is a 40/20/40 seating arrangement available as an option. An elevated driving position gives the driver a good view of the road and the small A-pillars make entering and exiting junctions a breeze. The steering wheel has both rake and reach adjustment while the seat is multi-adjustable allowing the driver to obtain the perfect driving position. The high grade materials used on the interior make for plush surroundings and the controls are laid out in a logical manner. The cabin is suitably blessed with a large number of storage compartments, trays and cup holders. Five adults can sit in relative comfort in the X3 but the middle seat in the rear is still a little on the small side so it's best to keep the journeys short if you have a full complement of passengers. The car has grown in length, width and in height, which means more legroom in the rear. The BMW X3 comfort levels overall are admirable because has a much better ride than the previous generation and it is fairly quiet and refined. There is minimal road roar from the tyres but a downside was wind noise at motorway speed โ€“ surprisingly loud. Apart from the wind noise the X3 is a good companion whether on- or off-road.
