1974 BMW E9 CSL with only 42479 miles for sale for £54,000

Vin number 2285494 making it the 494th of the 500 RHD CSLs made.

Originally registered in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and has the original PDI documentation. Full BMW main dealer service history to December 1980 at which time the car had covered 24722 miles. A BMW corrosion protection service leaflet was found in the service wallet and both front inner wings have holes plugged indicating that this service may have been carried out.

Imported in 1984 to Jersey in the Channel Islands to a local art dealer and car enthusiast who also had a Ferrari Dino and BMW 2002 Turbo amongst others.

There is no service history during this period but after speaking with the owner’s son, the cars were not used very often and maintained as needed but no records exist, but he suggests that the mileage is correct (Jersey is 9 by 5 miles with a maximum speed limit of 40 mph).

After the owner passed away in 2010 the car was sold to a local Automobile restoration company who sold it to my friend Lord Milner who still owns the car today.

This 1973 BMW CSL is in very original unmolested condition with very low mileage after decades in storage and now needs either sympathetic recommissioning or restoration.

The last tax disc showing in the windscreen indicated that the car was last used on the road in 1995.

From 2010 to now I have dry stored the car for Lord Milner and recommissioning some of the mechanicals which included a full service, new full stainless steel exhaust system, rebuilt alternator, cooling system flush and refill with correct antifreeze, fuel tank removed cleaned internally and externally and tank sealer applied, and the tank refitted. All brake callipers were rebuilt but currently there is a small fluid leak around the brake servo which needs attention. A new battery has been fitted recently and the car started after a few years in storage and is driving well with no faults noticed from the gearbox or axle. New tyres and a little remedial mechanical work would return this car to the road.

The interior is in excellent condition needing the wood to be varnished and the steering wheel re-covered. Three out of the four electric windows work but the heater fan blower is seized.

The aluminium bonnet, boot and door skins are in very good condition but there are areas of the bodyshell that need attention. This model of BMW built in the 1970’s had a reputation for severe rusting of the inner wings, strut towers and bulkhead but as can be seen in the attached images these areas are in good condition. Both outer sills, floor pans, rear wheelarches, small areas or the boot floor and rear panel and the rear sections of the front wings need attention due to corrosion and a full refinish in the original Fjord blue paint would have the car looking superb.

If the car is sold outside of Jersey, the registration number will be retained, and a certificate of export will be issued. There may be customs duties to pay depending on the destination, but it is my understanding that if UK registered there will be a 5% VAT charge as the car is over 30 years old and of historic significance. There is a daily ferry from Jersey to Portsmouth in the UK and St Malo in France and if required shipping can be arranged to either of these destinations.

The car is in Jersey in the Channel Isles, and anyone interested in viewing can be collected from the airport or ferry terminal and taken back with no obligation to buy.
