Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Classic Sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2025 on Sunday the 9th of November, NEC, Birmingham, B40 1NT.
Originally supplied new in 1988 to the wealthy owner of a shipping company, a friend of Touring-Car driver Lawrence Bristow, who advised him to ''buy a 16-valve Golf and take it to GTI Engineering”
Delivered as a high-specification factory 16V and immediately converted by GTI Engineering to full RE1900 specification, featuring an overbored 1.9-litre 16-valve engine built by Gary Davidson, with a gas-flowed head by Dave Crissel and installation by Paul Hetherington
Specification includes a sports exhaust, uprated springs and gas dampers, 15-inch Ronal alloys, and the car was repainted by GTI Engineering in Mercedes Nautical Blue with colour-coded bumpers
Luxurious grey leather electric Recaro interior complemented by VDO auxiliary gauges, Blaupunkt graphic-equaliser stereo, factory air-conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, mirrors and sunroof, tinted glass, and headlamp wash
In late 2019, the Golf was treated to a comprehensive recommissioning costing £4,940.76, including a full service, cambelt replacement, brake and suspension overhaul, minor body repairs and fresh paint as required
Following light use in interim years, recent maintenance includes an oil service and coolant change
Complete with its original Volkswagen document wallet, owner’s manuals, historic tax discs, period GTI Engineering brochures, a stamped service book and additional invoices, the car has been well maintained from new
Presented with multiple keys, GTI key fob, VDO booklet, and extensive paperwork rarely retained on surviving cars
Believed to be a one off RE1900 combining bespoke colour and luxury trim — arguably the ultimate period Mk2 GTI and a showcase of 1980s British tuning craftsmanship
Iconic Auctioneers have been privileged to represent many examples of the ever popular Mk2 Golf GTi in all forms, however, we have seen one quite like this and thoroughly welcome your inspection of this remarkable example.
