The lengthy description:
One previous keeper. Sold as BMW Authorised Used Car to me on 4 / 11/ 2016 by Cooper Teesside which was also the original car supplier at c.8,700 miles.
I love this car to bits, over maintain it and it will be sorely missed. My growing family and an overseas opportunity mean that it is time to see if I can reach a fair settlement for the car and parts at this time. Although quite unconventional, I’m hoping to shift all items as one job lot. I’m located in Glasgow and the thought of changing parts out on the car and packaging and posting things is not my ideal scenario. I’m trying to leave enough fat in the deal so that someone could split the package themselves and make some money if wished. I’m offering this because it saves me faff, garage time and postage costs. If I can’t reach the price I require then I will most likely return the car to standard and split the package.
Timeline of upgrades and servicing in my ownership:
M Performance limited slip differential, M Performance exhaust (standard tips) and 3dr chassis strengthening brace fitted at 9663 miles. All currently fitted to the car. Rubber BMW fitted floor mats also installed at this time as I find they protect the floor carpet much better than standard fabric floor mats.
Manual gearbox replaced at 11,996 miles (February 2017) due to an audible whine in 3rd gear. Replaced under factory warranty with a brand new box. This gave me the chance to bed in the new box without any abuse. It has zero whines or clunks etc.
Early initial service carried out 11,996 miles (February 2017) as car was in BMW for the gearbox replacement and I don’t like the very long period between delivery and the planned first service. This was an oil service.
Car is covered with a BMW Insured Warranty at Named Component Level following the end of the initial 3-year factory warranty. If anything needed done it would be done but it has been very fault free.
I replaced all brake pads, discs and sensors earlier this year. The car is running OEM BMW M4 road pads all round on 2-piece Brembo discs. These are still very fresh with an absolute tonne of life left in them. My original discs had suffered corrosion from not being looked after properly, rust hard spots had formed and this led to juddering through uneven wear. I decided to do a full job on it so that the brakes feel mint.
The car has received an early second service at 29,446 miles (March 2019) including oil service and new spark plugs. This is a c.£500 dealer service which is now out of the way.
The Motul RBF 600 brake fluid was changed in the same week by an independent garage as the BMW dealer was scared to cross contaminate their brake bleeder – odd story given I had sealed bottles of fresh Motul RBF 600 (think this was an attempt to force me to buy their fluid and they were taken aback when I said to leave the fluid). The computer was reset so all service counters are correct.
A new steering shaft was installed at 30,975 miles (April 2019) by BMW. The steering shaft bearings are a known issue across numerous BMW models. The steering started to feel sticky as the bearings started to noticeable seize. This repair work included an upgrade to 3 series thrust plates to avoid another known issue which can cause early steering knock. There is zero steering knock or any other knocks on this car.
I-drive readings on 5 October 2019:
Engine oil – 03/2021 or 17,000 miles;
Brake Fluid – 03/2021;
Rear brake pads – 22,000 miles;
Front brakes pads – 26,000 miles.
I’ve MOT’d the car today for the sale as it was due at month end. Car passed with zero advisories. The MOT expires on 19 October 2020.
The car currently runs 4 standard 18” rear wheels all round with Michelin Pilot Super Sports in 245 wide on all wheels. All 245 tyres have a good amount of tread. The front wheels have 10mm Eibach hubcentric wheel spacers and run longer wheels nuts and locking nuts. There is zero rubbing in all types of driving and the fronts are wearing really well compared to standard 225s which usually wear early on the edges.
I prefer a “square” tyre setup as it makes the car more balanced front to rear, turns better with more front grip and feels more playful like a sport hatch should in my opinion.
The car is running a Burger Motorsports JB+ module. This is running c.3psi+ boost over standard and adds a nice mid-range punch to the standard linear power delivery – makes it feel a little more turbocharged. I’ve run this for 25k with absolutely zero issues set at c.75% of gain. It is very easy to remove and flags no warnings on the ECU. Very easy to remove before dealer visits as only one accessible plug.
Unfitted additional parts to be included with the sale of the car:
The car will also be provided with a Wagner Tuning Evo 1 Competition intercooler and a Wagner Tuning sports cat. These items were fitted for less than 1000 miles and were removed for a BMW service during the initial warranty period and then I never bothered re-fitting them as the car was fast enough in its current state. I kept them as I thought I might JB4 or custom map the car but never got round to it with a new born coming on the scene 17 months ago;
+ 4 standard 18” front wheels fitted with used Michelin Pilot Alpins winter tyres. I swap to these wheels in winter. The car is very good in snow with these and the LSD. I’ve never been stuck in this car including driving between sites in the beast from the east to find that nobody else had made it to the meetings!;
+ 4 used standard 18” x 225 Michelin Pilot Super Sports;
+ The standard rear diff and casing unit;
+ Standard exhaust minus the tips as they are fitted to the M Performance exhaust which is on the car;
+ Standard floor mats;
+ 1 litre of unopened BMW oil;
+ Used Rhino full boot liner costing £135 new – this is custom fit to the 1 series and includes optional sides and boot protection flap;
+ All items like BMW tools, tyre compressor and boot net are still in the car;
+ BMW jack point adapter for a normal jack as it is handy for changing to winter wheels.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time costing the parts at expected second hand values (all parts were new but have been owned/used by me), taking into consideration the fitting costs of some parts including the LSD and the recent major service and new brake discs and pads all round. I feel this is a very fair valuation which still leaves plenty of fat for someone looking to trade off of the package and keep what they want.
Other comments on my ownership – I’ve owned numerous turbocharged cars. This car has always been suitably warmed up and cooled down on each use. It uses zero oil between services as should be the case with any modern car imo – I don’t understand the people with oil consumption on the forum as it must be going somewhere through a worn seal! Engine speed is always matched on downshifts as required and the clutch has never been needlessly ridden/slipped. Previous cars I’ve owned have surpassed 180k miles on the original clutch.
This car has not been tracked in my ownership (the last 28k miles). I don’t know about the previous owner but nothing suggested it such as the original tyres and brakes.
Previous car was a very nice 130i which I also loved. The M135i has been 2 bucket washed all of my ownership and I buy new washing and drying mitts at the start of each year.
The exhaust flap gives the slightest buzz on cold startup which is gone within 10 seconds and well before the flap closes during the cold start cycle. It makes no other noise for the rest of any journey so I have not touched it.
Many thanks for your time in reviewing this and I hope this package can make an enthusiast very happy as it has done me.
