Here is my reluctant advert for my stunning 2002 model Legacy STi S401. If you’re not familiar with the model I urge you to take a quick look on the web for in-depth info, however I have put together some of the main details at the bottom of the advert.
This car has been in the country for 1 year. I personally picked it for import through my friend Josh at Gorilla Imports. It has been a second car for me and has had the upmost care since the day I collected it. Of much benefit to the car (and opposite to my bank account) it has had a fortune spent, with servicing and modifications being only of the highest quality. This was a one owner car in Japan, and it had clearly been nurtured from new.
Before it saw UK roads it had the usual full fluid change + service, Brake strip and clean, new pads, coilover clean and wax, etc (Force of habit, even though the fluids looked clean and a stamp showed a recent service) as well as a very time consuming full underbody treatment with Bilt Hamber products (Dynax S50 Cavity wax and UB for everything else) This took 20+ Hours of labour, and involved dropping all the arch liners, exhaust, trims, brakes etc etc to get the product everywhere. Fun this was not, but worth it! (Photos of the underside before treatment are available).
The car is fitted with a few well chosen upgrades, First being the incredible OHLINS DFV Coilovers, which ride incredibly and are a brilliant upgrade from the OEM shock + spring setup. These are fully adjustable and are in mint condition. After owning the car for a couple of months I decided to liberate a few more ponies from the stable and increase the noise a bit, This came courtesy of a set of Genuine ZEROSPORTS downpipes with sports metal catalyst mated to a genuine HKS 3” Titanium tipped exhaust. This combined with a remap for UK fuel (V-Power of course) at stock boost saw 295hp and massive gains in the midrange. The next step for the car was a bigger intercooler, the stock item is on its limits in stock form and I was advised to change this to help the car breathe a bit better, so fitted a STI V9 Impreza cooler. The goal for the future was around 350hp (more on that later) but it drives amazingly as it is with lots of power throughout the rev range.
The full list of upgrades is below:
ZEROSPORTS Metal intake pipe
ZEROSPORTS Intercooler duct/bonnet tray
ZEROSPORTS Stainless Steel Downpipes
ZEROSPORTS Rad Cooling Panel
HKS Ti Power 3” exhaust with V Band rear section added
DIXCEL Brake discs & Project MU Pads
DEFI STi Genome Boost Gauge & Controller
Legacy OEM Optional boot liner
The car has just had its Achilles heel removed (Read weak bottom end) courtesy of a full rebuild with the proper parts required. This consisted of the following:
EJ207 Nitride Treated crankshaft (Cross drilled)
EJ257 Con-rods (Better oil flow and good for 450+hp)
ACL Race bearings
Genuine gasket set
Genuine piston ring set
New oil Modine
New OEM Headbolts
New timing belt and water pump
New stem seals and cylinder head refresh and test
New OEM Exedy Blue Box clutch
New pitch mount
New clutch master cylinder
This was in the plan before chasing the 350hp figure But came slightly quicker than planned one evening. whilst driving it I heard the slightest of noises so pulled over and had the car trailered home. (Oval conrods are an issue on the earlier engines and can and will damage the bearings, Usually towards the 100k Mile mark). The engine builder was drafted in to complete a full rebuild, and once completed I began the 1000 mile running in process. The builder really praised the car, mentioning it was also on its original clutch which is almost unknown on a car of this age. The internals of the engine were spotless, with only minor scuffing to the surface coating of one rod bearing.
The car is rust free throughout, and the paintwork is in great order. It is washed often with the standard 2 bucket method, snowfoam and quick detailer etc at my lockup, with a wax every couple of months. There are a few odd small scratches here and there, and minor pin dents in a couple of spots but nothing that detracts from the overall look of the car, the pearl really shines and it looks bronze in the right light. The car benefits from a very rare and genuine set of boot and bumper lips, made of proper plastic. It really does stand out. There is no rust on the bodywork, or anywhere else.
The factory BBS Wheels have been painted in their OEM Silver hue to a great standard not too long ago and fitted with new TOYO Proxes T1R Tyres.
The interior is in fantastic condition, It still has the factory ‘soft touch’ interior plastic coating, no rips tears or damage to the leather seats and no untoward additions in the cabin. The dash is crack free and has not been drilled or tampered with. The factory Mcintosh sound system works well also. The drivers seat has very minor wear which is barely noticeable. The original gearknob is in great nick and is complemented by the immaculate V9 STi Impreza all black 3 spoke steering wheel. The full black interior is very classy and a league ahead of the impreza’s and even the normal legacy’s.
Day to Day driving is brilliant in this, and I have used it to tour round the country at every opportunity purely for how amazing it is to drive. It retains around 28mpg on normal driving, but you can see 30+ if you’re careful with your right foot!
This is the second one of these I have owned, and I will probably live to regret the sale of this one also but I cannot justify owning 4 cars, so it will have to go. I could go on and on about the car but it needs to be seen to be appreciated and any new owner will be impressed.
For the asking price of £11000 the car will come with a fresh oil and filter service to finish off the running in process for the new owner.
There is also the option of the 350+hp upgrade kit for the car, including brand new hybrid upgraded turbos, full manifold kit (Ready to port) and a set of CUSCO Underbody braces for £12000. (These cost me a large sum of money and time to work out a combination of the best parts, and I believe they will be the ultimate touch to finish off this car, Giving it the power the chassis would thrive on!
Any serious buyers please contact me and I will pass on more details and photos if desired, I will not be interested in PX unless its above 5k Value (Genuine, no dreamers) and will not take silly offers.
