With current deterrents not working and the Rwanda scheme cancel by the government, should plans to send people who enter the UK on small boats to the volcanic island in the south Atlantic (or any other out of the way British outpost) be considered again.

It was initially mooted as an alternative if the Rwanda deal was declared illegal but initial infrastructure construction deemed costly at the time but as the costs have escalated since to house illegal immigrants, should this be reconsidered.

I am not against legal immigration but illegal immigrants are starting to drain resources away from the legal population of this country.

This is PH so use big lissy to sink em mid channel. After about a half dozen I doubt there would be many brave enough to attempt it.

Spending money to improve their origin countries hasn't worked so we just need to be faster and more efficient processing and deporting.

To me it's pretty simple, but will cost money. We process applications within hours of arrival, rather than letting people have 2 years of either illegal residency or delayed approval. Getting on a boat will be less appealing if all the other illegals before you have been sent back within a few days.

Yes it involves spending money, but protecting our borders should be a top priority.

That seems to be the major problem, not getting value for money for what we already spend ie France to patrol their border, hotels and benefits. If that was better assessed, funds could be diverted towards better deterrents. Even France says make it less appealing to travel to the UK.

How many people actually enter illegally?

Estimated 35-40,000 via small boats this year.

Plus visa overstayers adding another 40,000

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/uk-visa-o...

Potential 80,000 a year to house, feed and medically treat every year. (Guildford has a population of 77k)

Apparently Denmark make asylum seekers give up jewellery and other items of value to pay for their care while their asylum application is being processed.

I don't know why the Government don't prepare a list of countries that are deemed safe to return migrants. If a UK citizen can safely visit that country for a holiday, then it should be a non starter for someone claiming asylum. Places such as Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Turkey.

Enough that it costs £8m a day. My guess is that would pay proper wages for a few nurses or carers, so we didn't need the immigrants. smile

Best solution would be to rescue them when they are still in French waters and take them back to the nearest safe place, France.

For the 10,000 time if they are entitled to asylum they have not entered illegally.

Might want to ask the former Tory government as to why they gave up on deportation. News articles suggest Labour are getting the numbers up but let's wait and see.

If you could pick people up at sea an sail them back with other illegal migrants seeing boots going the other way this would work.

But you can't drop people off in France and we can't sink boats an kill people so really we have to process them. How do you legally process someone in 24hrs etc?

Easy.

As I mentioned above, we have people claiming asylum from "safe" countries such as India, Turkey, Vietnam. Places where UK residents regularly visit on holiday.

Those that come from a safe country are deported immediately.

Go on tell us how this would work?

As for your list of safe countries, Vietnam may be safe for a holiday but do not criticise the government.

And do they come with all the documentation to prove where they came from? Not really going to work like everything else we have tried.

Worth a punt and is certainly gathering momentum, 2,500 signatures in the last hour.

Kurds on Turkey may have a issue with the Turkish government among others.

Just because a country may be considered safe for a tourist does not in any way mean it will be safe for a persecuted minority or if you are critical of the government or leadership.

Tourists on a beach sunning themselves are often completely sheltered from a reality that it's resident may be ensuring.

Shows a naivety to suggest otherwise.

Edit for being a bit fick with speelling
