Corvette To Die?

Financial crisis hits GM in the V8

Reports in the US media suggest Corvette developments have been placed ‘on indefinite hold’ by General Motors, as the company struggles with its financial crisis.

The current C6 was scheduled for total replacement in 2012, when it would have reached its 8th birthday. However, according to Autoweek, even a model upgrade for 2012 that was suggested internally instead of the full model replacement has now been ruled out. That plan would have seen the C6 on sale for up to 12 years before being replaced by the C7, making it the longest serving ‘Vette model alongside the C4 which ran from 1982 to 1996.

Unfortunately for US muscle fans, Autoweek claims that GM management is pretty clueless when it comes to planning a future for its iconic sportscar. While rumours have abounded of new mid-engined or all wheel drive configurations, there is no clear road map for the model’s future.

It’s unlikely that GM will allow the Corvette to die, says the report, but don’t expect the next incarnation of America’s sports car to arrive before 2014, and that could be optimistic.

Good - there's not much wrong with the current model apart from a lack of RHD. Maybe they can engineer that instead...

The factory team's C6 has won the GT1 class at Le Mans 5 times and you aren't impressed eek
Shame they never built a RHD version, and they were more of a bargain at US prices than as an export, but I think they are a much underrated car in Europe.

A race prepared car has absoloutely no bearing on a car for use on public roads.

So what? you stated "loads of cubic inches, not much else"

We would assume that you meant the car was slow and flemke gave you the record breaking ring time.

I didnt say it wasnt quick. There are more reasons for buying a (road) car than that.

Oh, thanks for the bucketfull of detail there! A Clarkeson fan by any chance?

If you had really driven one before - and in any sort of environment where you could open the taps and throw it around a bit, you'd be telling the truth.

Look before this goes off on a personality killing spree. I can see where eowen was coming from, but some people take it the wrong way.

He said there is lots of cubic inches suggesting to me that he thinks the car is fast. yes....so good round the track etc. but he said not good for much else, suggesting its not particularly a very good everyday car for someone, who doesnt just hoon around at weekends or on track.

Just my tuppence eowen, please feel free to correct if im wrong .
