Wiesmann Prototype in Autobahn Smash

Wiesmann accident exactly a month after fatal Porsche prototype crash

A Wiesmann GT prototype has crashed on a German autobahn exactly a month after a fatal crash involving a Porsche test driver. Both accidents happened on Friday 13 but in the latest incident no one was killed.

According to reports the police concluded that the Wiesmann driver was travelling on the left-hand lane of the motorway when a red BMW E30 Convertible changed lanes from right to left.

While the test driver tried to avoid collision with the BMW the E30 veered further left and into the guard rail but swung back to the right. As he steered right he hit a truck, while another truck also collided with the prototype.

It seems that both the Wiessman and a number of other vehicles were damaged in the crash. Damage is estimated to be 150,000 Euros and two people were injured. The police said the driver of the BMW did not stop and is wanted for questioning.

Exactly a month ago a 911 prototype crashed on the A5 Autobahn, killing a 51-year-old Porsche engineer. Witnesses said the driver, who has been with the company for 25 years, had been driving at a high rate of speed in the 998 prototype.

So it was an accident caused by bad driving on the part of a third party and not the Weismann driver? Why is this news?

'rate of speed', as in first differential of velocity, i.e. acceleration?

This is a fairly typical scenario - somebody changes lanes without signaling or looking in the mirror.
This only shows that it's way too easy to get a driving licence.

It’s not too easy to get a licence so much as too easy to keep it. Everyone has to use indicators to pas their test. Most of the non indicating drivers I see seem to be the middle aged who presumably got their licences 20+ years ago and have never been questioned since and just become lazy, arrogant and inconsiderate.

If that was this country there'd be the usual "Safety obsessives" jumping up & down to restrict speed at the site of each accident.

Considering that the BMW kept veering left until it hit the barrier it sounds like the speculated failure to indicate was possibly not the root of the problem.

I think it's more a question of economics. Germany has a strong motor industry and central to a lot of this is the autobahn and Nürburgring which are used for "testing". Both by amateurs and professionals.

Take that away and you're going to ps off a lot of enthusiasts and engineers. Many of which are central to the German economy. Unlike our government the German's support it's industry.

I'm fairly sure the autobahn will be capped but it'll be when it's economically viable to do so.

I think that something like 50% of the Autobahn kilometers now have speed limits and it really means you have to keep an "eye out" all the time otherwise you will eventually be flashed on the Autobahn and it gets expensive. Typical areas are long sweeping bends with 120k limits and bridges with 80k limits. Bear in mind that if you have an accident on an unlimited road and are travelling over 130k then you are automatically considered to be partially to blame by the court.

How? It doesn't say if any of the cars were speeding, and noone died.

+1

It actually sounds like an accident that could have happened at 30mph for all we know. Reads for all the world like a drunk/incapable driver causing everyone else around to evade and have an accident. If anything, this proves that speed does not have to be the cause of every incident. Won't stop people trying to link it as such.

The Autobahn is not a free high speed test track.

Its a public road.

Car companies should be banned from carrying out any "testing" that involves high speeds.
