7Min 27.56Secs For GT-R At The Ring

Nissan knocks a second and a half off GT-R lap time - more to come today?

Nissan has returned to the Nurburgring with the 2010 GT-R and chief test driver Toshio Suzuka to continue its assault on the volume production car record.

According to a Nissan press release issued yesterday, the test team has clocked up a 7:27.56 lap with a Japanese spec GT-R running optional V-Spec RAYS forged alloy wheels and Dunlop tyres.

Although this is significantly faster than the GT-R's previous record, the team will continue to press home its attack today – if conditions are right - under the direction of Nissan's GT-R engineering chief Kazutoshi Mizuno.

Apparently yesterday's time was set in dry conditions, but the track had a coating of dust and sand that is said to have reduced the available grip in some places.

Although the team is celebrating a new GT-R record, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has previously claimed a 7:26.4 lap time in production trim – so Nissan's quest for extra pace continues.

Not again! We've only just forgotten about all that malarky. Ah... perhaps that's why they're back? wink

Still, fair play to them, it's a very impressive number and a very impressive car indeed.

Im sure you can achieve some impressive figures when you have a 100 strong backup team and a lorry full of spare gearboxes hehe

That's impressive, but the Corvette ZR1 at 7:26.4 is even more impressive to me. It shows how far the Americans have come.

Agreed, you expect a Jap sports car to handle well.

A Yank one... well.... soggy cardboard suspension.

This picture (below) is the first time I have looked at a GT-R and thought, "Actually...that looks pretty 'OK'." Up until now, it has done nothing for me. I suspect the colour and the angle have come together to make it look a little nicer.

Even better still is that the DODGE VIPER ACR is actually the record holder with a lap time of 7:22.1.

would be nice if the article was updated to reflect this rather than the second place corvette

I think the reason it doesnt get a mention is because its practically a race car for the road where as the ZR1 and GTR are more useable as daily drivers.

That's not really true though, you can jump in an ACR and take it to the supermarket with no more problems that you would with a ZR1. Its not like the radical that needs a laptop and 5 minute start up sequence.

If the test driver has actually got faster, do you think he's been practicing on his Xbox 360?

Yes, I know it could be the weather conditions....... But you've got to ask?

I see your point but you have to take in factors such as ground clearence, the rear spoiler on the ACR. The interior ect.

I love the ACR but it is far more focused to the track then either the GTR or the ZR1 thats why I think it doesnt get a mention thats all.

About the only questionable aspect of it is the use of the front splitter fill in piece, other than that it is just as much a road car as the vette, I will agree that my C5 vette is more practical than my Gen 2 viper, but not to the extent i would consider the viper not to be a road car. I would wager though that the 08 ACR is also a far more usable car than a Gen 2 viper (it has ABS for a start)

Dodge also only had one go at the ring with only a few laps and anyone who has watched the video cant help but agree the car was not at all suited to the track with the gear ratios being totally wrong, where as both GTR and Vette have been away to take stock and have another go and by all accounts the GTR is practically designed with a ring time in mind, yet neither have managed to beat the time.

has anyone got experience or knowledge of how fast any of these cars go round with a 'normal' daily driver at the wheel instead of a focused racing driver, it might reflect wgich cars are more easily driven fast as opposed to having a 'fastest ring car' title, but only if you are a very experienced race driver.

Haha, I would love to see a duel between a Porsche 911 (997) Turbo with their best driver and the Nissan GT-R with their best driver round the ring. Circuit closed for the day.
