Mazda MX-5 sets another world record

Insert 'hairdresser convention' gags here as MX-5 owners break a record for biggest ever gathering

A total of 683 MX-5s set a new world record in Holland at the weekend for the most Mazda models in one place. Around 1,450 participants were involved and, no, this wasn't just another Trent family wedding.

Harris's worst nightmare in four-wheeled form?

It surpasses the previous record of 459 Mazda cars set at Essen in 2010. Again this was using MX-5s, as could be probably be expected. The record was set at the 2013 MAX-5 event at Lelystad, taking in the RDW test centre and local roads.

The day was a jolly celebration of all things Mazda, with demonstrations of a rotary 3 racer and MaX5 Cup car. The MX-5 owners were also invited to test Mazda's new i-Activsense technology and enjoy some racing simulators as well.

Awards were handed out for 'the most beautiful and authentic' MX-5s, with the top three cars from Holland and Belgium. Either very few MX-5s came from further afield (possible) or there was some home advantage at work in the voting (also possible).

Euro MX-5 owners know a good time, clearly

After all this prize-giving, record-breaking fun, around 250 of the MX-5s and their owners stayed to watch Arbitrage in an specially-made drive-in cinema. What fun.

And the MX-5? We've yet to hear any more on the joint Alfa/Mazda project for the current car's replacement and a new Alfa Spider. But given the potential on offer through a collaboration between the two brands, we're eager for further developments.

Love them or hate them they do have a thriving scene these days. It very much reminds me of the Mini scene in the variety of owners and directions they take their cars.

I don't understand the flaming. How does this hurt anybody? Isn't it nice to have a big event like this to go to?

Admittedly, I wouldn't have gone, because I don't see the record as worth anything, but genuinely the worst thing about owning an MX5 is the amount of "hilarious" piss takes people make. It's just so disappointing.

Yawn......according to howmanyleft.co.uk there are over 100k mx-5's in the UK let alone the rest of the world, hardly an achievement considering how many there are! What's next how many ford mondeos in one place?

I find it's best to get in first. I went to a Jap car meet last night and was still in my suit compared to everyone else in jeans and ts etc. As soon as anyone commented on the suit I explained I'd come straight from the salon. They laugh, you've got the hairdresser joke in first, everyones a winner.

I take my comment back. Unlike me to make jibes like that. I used to get them when I had an S2000. It's all banter.

Whenever I drive an MX-5 I love it.

And recently, I came across a very tidy custom wide-wheel, can-exhaust, matt-grey example.

By rights it should have said 'buy me'.

Instead, and I can't really see why, it quietly whispered 'hairdresser'.

Shame, not that Mazda need worry, judging by the ongoing sales figures.

But wouldn't it be good if they hardened up those looks and went for a 21st century TR6.

Something really dreary about the hairdresser 'joke'

What it is saying is something like
"Oh, look I bet you don't even do a man's job and I reckon you're not straight"

I don't know many hairdressers (I don't have any hair) but I would think their job is just as valuable as many of the corporate arse lickers who make hairdresser jokes.

As for whether someone is straight or not. Who gives a st? What's the definition of straight anyway? I wouldn't trust all my mates in a room full of Thai ladyboys... but who cares?

Well they are apparently 10% of the population, if you believe their own stats... that might be optimistic on their part.

And I know loads of MX5 owners, and if there is one thing they do, that is take a proper ribbing over their car choice.

Not wishing to be picky, but if the world record is 'total number of Mazda's'... then doesn't it rather limit it to Mazda's??? hehe

Have they never have more than 683 Mazda's together at the factory?

Cool story, just not entirely sure what the exact record is??? confused

683 x 2 (seats per car) = 1,366....

Anyhow, I miss my Mk 1.

I think the world record might have been beaten again..

This certainly looks like it could be more than the reported 683 record holding number of Mazda's in one place.... whistle
