First ever standalone AMG showroom opens in China

Mercedes picks Beijing to push its AMG arm as a more separate brand

Mercedes has opened its first-ever AMG showroom in Beijing - in a luxury shopping centre.

But what's so different about this store from the 195 other AMG dealers in 18 countries across the globe? Well, the key is that it's the first standalone AMG store, the 370sq metres of AMG space not attached in any way to the 'normal' Merc Franchise.

To mark the opening of the store, the new G63 super-SUV made its debut there and, aside from using it for similar product launches, the idea behind the AMG centre is to offer a showroom where potential customers can learn about AMG's products, its Driving Academy and its motorsports programmes.

That Mercedes should choose China to launch its new AMG branding offensive is surely proof, if you ever needed it, that China is now the place where car manufacturers think they shift the most high-end product.

Surely if its a new store in China, all the stock and staff are fakes.

Yep, there will be a fake store in every city before long, though you can't fake the sound of some of those engines!!!! That's the acid test.

Oh dear.. We've had our own standalone AMG showroom in Hong Kong for a while now. Next door to the McLaren and Rolls dealer.

A cousin of mine was at the launch of that showroom; quite glitzy apparently, certainly from the (slightly blurred) pics I've seen.

Chinas greed for high end product is what may well save the UK's specialist manufacturers and get our economy going...

Exactly.

You have to wonder why he opened the thread to read it, if he hates it so much....

Does that not have the same address as the Mercedes-Benz Excellence Center, though?

I'm sure as an HK resident you're better-placed to know than me, but that story came from a Mercedes source originally, and I think the point they're trying to make is that the Beijing one is nowhere near a Merc dealer. Or maybe I'm completely misreading the situation...

Don't worry, it isn't all roses over there. No sooner will they feel they have arrived than India or wherever will be the new big thing.

That which currently makes them competitive, will rapidly make them Westernised, and then, uncompetitive.

China is on a rapid economic cycle which will see them overtaken as a cheap manufacturing base by a huge stack of countries within a decade from now.

So funny reading this after a discussion with a colleague of mine who thought China was still just full of sweat shops! How little so some people realise how China and India are on the up.

Anyone noticed how the Merc GP team is now Mercedes AMG ????

Don't know whether it was from the start of the season, can't say I've paid much attention, but certainly noticd it post race int with Schuey.

Last season they were definitely Mercedes GP, no mention of AMG.
