anyone had there outriggers done recently mine need doing, i have contacted Southways who are not to far from me,problem is they no longer do this they only do a chassis refurb which is out of my pocket .
If you don't mind me asking, how much is a refurb and what do you actually get for it?Some places offering cheaper outrigger replacements have been known to cut holes in the tub to access welding in the tops of the tubes.. They then fibreglass in the holes after welding. Not necessarily bad but ask plenty of questions and make sure you know what your getting and are happy with it.
I'm in the process of having mine done, but that's a full body off and strip down of the chassis. If i was to just do the outriggers, and judging by the overall condition on my chassis I could of done, then I'd definitely of done a partial lift. Out triggers can be properly welded and at least you can begin to have a better inspection of it.

If your outriggers are rotten then you need to get the body off. Mine had outriggers replaced but not due to rot, they were solid but the coating was taking a lot of looking after, I wanted peace of mind. If you've got rot on the outriggers then you'll have rot elsewhere
At what point do you just bite the bullet and change the chassis?By the time you have paid to pull the body off etc.
I assume the cost of labour will exceed the cost of a new chassis?

Chassis is £4500 inc vat, that buys a lot of labour! All depends just how bad original chassis is?
all depends if you consider the new chassis will need everything fitting back on it pipes hoses suspension etc. labour mounts up if on the other hand your engine transmission suspension is in good fettle its just the outriggers but most folk once they have paid or done the work themselves go the whole hog strip the chassis down shotblast repair and recoat with a material of there choice.

This
Here's a few pics to show what the rest of the chassis will be like, and no amount of waxoyl or anything else will stop the rust you see in the photo's. Although only mainly surface rust, the powdercoat has completely broke down.
People think it is just outrigger rot, but in reality TVR did not make any attempt to "clean" any welded joints, so the result over a period of time is in the pics.
The cost of the labour is getting the body off and on.
I had my chassis blasted, new outriggers welded on and then it was powder coated.
Last autumn Southways quoted £2,500 for the chassis work (I took the body off myself). I actually used someone else although that was nothing to do with cost and nothing against Southways, who I have only heard good things about.
You can buy a new chassis off the shelf which I think is just slightly more than this. In some ways you may prefer a new chassis and I can totally understand this (in terms of overall cost the price difference is small). I have an early chassis and really wanted to keep the original. Even had a new chassis been slightly cheaper I would have stuck with the original.
I totally agree with the above comments about having to take the body right off to do it all properly. Dont be tempted by a short cut. It may be cheaper in the short term, but the job will need doing again sooner.
edited to add that having reread this thread I see a new chassis is 4.5 k which is a lot more than the cost of a refurb. The pictures posted above are similer to how mine was and probably similar to most of them. BUT you wont know how yours is until you lift the body.

You will be better off talking to an expert. Richard Thorpe at RT Racing in Sheffield supplies the chassis to TVR dealers like Powers. His workshop is full of chassis ready to be delivered or fitted there. He is very amenable and helpful.

Main chassis on mine was in very good order. Pic he is after blasting a a little light surface rust from a little rain, but the fact I took off the powder coating is enabling me to paint the whole thing and future proof it for the years to come and give me guilt free driving in the rain!

Not anymore he doesn’t. https://www.rtracing.co.uk/content/tvr-chassis-res...
I’m sure Powers have gone with their own chassis which frankly looks the best by a long stroke.
OK, I'll come clean here, I have been working on replacement chassis (the ones Dom has been posting about)
the T-car version is done (as in several available off the shelf), the Crim/Griff one is almost done.
Cost is not my dept, however, Grif/Chrim will be cheaper (less to it), and bear in mind that properly blasting/treating/coating these chassis so they don't rust away again is NOT cheap, in round numbers it's some 1/3 of the cost of the chassis.

I've seen the sales blurb for his new chassis and I've no doubt its is very good but I could not have it powdercoated. Never been a fan of that protection but he also offers zinc coating and stainless too. Now that would be the dog's thingies.
