This morning I've just had my iPhone replaced by Apple... and discovered that Google dropped Push / Exchange sync to iOS devices earlier this year eek

It seems that with IMAP and POP there is no Push option - only fetch. Bugger.

Don't like the Gmail app at all, just seems slow and cumbersome.

So... any suggestions on alternatives?

I wonder if I restore from an earlier backup whether it'll work again?

If you restore Google's servers from an earlier backup, yes.

They will probably choose not to allow you to do this.

If you are relying on a free service then assume it will be switched off tomorrow.
If you are playing for a premium Google service then check the T&Cs.

It's just the free Gmail service - it's personal stuff, rather than work.

I think the standard gmail account option on iOS is OK. You don't get the instant mail delivery of activesync, but at least you still have CardDav and Caldav for contacts/calendar sync. Plus you get the archive option visible too.

I've had a day without Push so far (I don't use iCloud, I have too much stuff) and I feel a bit lost!

I've always liked to read mail and either delete or file depending on what I need to do with it.

The Gmail app is shocking offline (not helpful on the tube!) and the Mailbox thing trashed my mailbox with it's silly swipe and defer methodology.

I can see me paying for GApps. irked

We do.

You don't.

In 2013, you have to go all-in on your ecosystem.

This is why my crappy WP8 phone gets push (Outlook.com), and your swanky iPhone (gmail.com) doesn't.

From what I've read WP8 will lose Push...

Let me rephrase - the petty tit-for-tat between Google, Apple and MS is penalising the consumer.

I use Google Apps and get push - can't recommend it enough. However they've stopped doing the free accounts so now it's going to cost you $50 a year per user, that's pretty good for the service you get though. Failing that, I think you still get push from Hotmail if you really want to change.

scratchchinCan you set up an automatic forward from your gmail account to another service that does provide push?

I was wondering if iCloud did that. As long as it allows "send as" it's not an issue.

Bloody frustrating, as IMAP doesn't clean up as quickly, so I'm getting email on the iPad via Exchange and then having to delete the same bloody mail on the iPhone! rage

What precisely is the big deal? Is fetch set to 15 minutes that bad?

It is when you've got an email conversation between six or eight mates in the offing, yes.

And WM8 only offers push with a live.com type address. No push from my own domain's email, as I had with my previous Android phone.

The "big deal" is that I want email when it arrives - not 15 minutes later. I couldn't give a rat's ass about battery life.

ETA - as per my response to Jeremyc, having one device on Exchange and one on IMAP is something of a headache too! frown

Write a letter to google. So how does it work? Can google stop certain devices from using push? It seems daft sniping certain devices when they are in essence just an email client.

Google have stoped EAS / Exchange access to GMail. "Grandfather" rights are still available, but as the device has changed (due to a fault with the handset) I now can't get them back.
