Is this level of corrosion typical on a 7yr old, 60,000 mile car?

Thinking that I should just slap some waxoyl on it and forget about it.

It's probably a little more than normal. More like a 10 year old car than 7, but that's splitting hairs a bit.

Waxoyl won't do much for it. Ideally remove the components, de rust and repaint (not time and cost effective) or wire brush and hammerite or underseal type paint is probably more worthwhile. Or do as most do and ignore it until it gets worse and replace if/when needed.

I remember being a bit horrified on getting a video from the dealer during the first service on wife's 2015 Tiguan, quite how rusty the suspension components looked. Didn't do anything about it as intended to sell at 3yrs but she loves it and we still have it.

That's all part of the superior German quality then enables them to charge so much more than the competition for very mundane products!

They're not "so much more" at all.

That is cr@p, I have an o6 mini with less rust on suspension, a couple of years ago sold a 98 e36 that was basically rust free underneath, and the year before an 00 e39 that was equally rust free.

This car wouldn't be in Scotland by any chance would it?

OP you should do something to it, I have an Audi RS2 which is 24 years old and in May i decided to get the underneath refreshed/refurbed. If you think your is bad take a look at some of the suspension on mine. Suffice to say its all sorted now but to be honest, i left it far too late and cost me a small fortune but due to the rarity of the RS2 its still worth fixing. I will post a few pictures and you can take a look at the thread i had running too. If you have any plans to keep it then get something done, even if temporary.

After the refurb:

Im not saying go to the extremes that i did, due to the fact once you start digging, the "hole" just gets deeper and you need to know how deep you want that "hole", in fact its really how deep are your pockets...

Good work!

Our Touran is just a family hack.

I was just surprised that no advisory showed up on the MOT history given the appearance.

I have unloaded a small can of black waxoyl on the worst of it which will do for now but in next year’s MOT, the inspector may take a dim view on that.

It’ll keep rusting beneath the black Waxoil.
