I'm just about to purchase a car from an OPC that has a rev range 3 recorded. They've undertaken a compression test and are happy to warranty it but is this something I need to worry about? I intend to keep the car for a long time.

What’s the car? And how many rev range 3 has it recorded?

A few ignitions is nothing to worry about - they can glitch. If it’s a lot then it may have had a hard life.

If it’s had a compression test and passed and will be warrantied... go ahead and purchase.

If something goes wrong in the future you’re covered.

Any more in range 3 afterwards and they may require another pressure test for next warranty. (speaking from experience). This lead me to believe if something did go pop, I might not be covered.

For belt and braces at the next warranty renewal, then sure this might well be done.... part of the equation will be how many operating hours have been put on since the last event.

OP is saying they are buying a car that has a few ignitions in RR3 (not that severe IMO) and it has been compression tested already and the OPC is putting warranty on it, with knowledge of the RR report.
Best thing to then do is continue to renew the extended warranty before the existing runs out.

@OP, guessing this is a manual 991.2 GT3?, which one are you looking at?

Two issues that need to be considered. Mechanical health of the engine and resale prospects. They're only loosely related.

Car may well be entirely healthy. Sad reality is that, rightly or wrongly, range three ignitions carry a stigma and will reduce the resale market at least to some extent. Impossible to put a number on it, maybe only a little, maybe quite a lot. But at least some buyers will refuse a car with any ignitions in range three and above.

Personally, given the uncertainty would want the car at a significant discount to reflect the at least somewhat compromised resale prospects. Or find another example.

My understanding was rev range 1 and 2 are due to hitting the limiter and rev range 3 and 4 are likely to be due to a missed downshift but provided compression tests have been carried out and it has been more 50 hours since the over rev then engine should be ok. If Porsche are willing to give a warranty on it, I would keep the extended warranty going. Clearly check the no. ignitions and there is a formula to work out how long it was in the over rev (I thinks it’s broadly (ignitions / 3 )/ red line X 60 = number of seconds in over rev

Range 5 and 6 in my mind are regarded as problematic and likely to cause engine damage, I would be more reluctant to buy a car with over revs in these two ranges

I would ask if they will offer en extended warranty to cover any risk ... although it's already two years on an approved car ?

The extended warranties are really not expensive (IMHO) and come sale time are a real advantage for the private seller ...

If my car was standard I would have kept it in extended warranty ... I had one of the first GT4's from my OPC ... I was lucky ! smile

And pre the manual 991.2 GT3 in 2018 when Porsche changed the wording, Rev range 3&4 were accepted for warranty renewal as fine with no additional tests needed.

I just want to say thank you to everyone that gave feedback, both on here and off the board. I did a bit more digging and it had one ignition in rev range 3 which I'm happy to accept. It's got a tad over three years Porsche warranty on it so once lockdown is lifted I intend to get out and enjoy the car, both here and in Europe.
