Likewise the Scirocco if they are chunky and tall kids.
They may be 'cheap' to buy but neither is cheap to run! You won't get much over 25mpg from either of them as a long term average.
I would swerve the MK1 V6 anyway and push the budget to a MK2 V6 as it's a much better car dynamically.

This. Only one of your options is actually a genuine four seater. I couldn't get my grandson's car seat in the back of the TT partly because of the space but also the seatbelt layout. Audi says a max height for rear seat passenger of 4'11" iirc, presumably including booster seat, but it's really tight in there. E63eeeeee... said:

Scirocco definitely has more room than a TT, we had a 10 plate DSG R with leather and 19’s when they first came out. Took ours to France with a 6 month and 10 year old. I would like to get a four seat sports car so our young kids (3 & 6) can be as terrified as my wife.

The Scirocco drives better. The manual Mk1 TT V6 I had may well be the worst car I've had the displeasure of owning. They're pretty but slow and the heavy donkey in the front makes the chassis even more leaden and uninspiring. If you want something to drive at 5/10ths, is pretty and sounds OK (compared to the 1.8T cars), that's one thing, but don't expect any driving enjoyment. They're a 2 seater too. You can torture kids in them like the picture above but the back is an awful place to sit. With the rear seats down they make quite a useful 'van' though.

We've just swapped the missus TT for an R, I'd echo the above. The R feels much faster despite the on paper extra power not being a lot, it does drive nicer too although not the last word in dynamics. I was surprised how much room there is in the back of the Scirocco but that is comparing it to the TT which is tiny, although saying that its pretty dark back there with the dark interior and the high window line. The TT isn't mega fast and isn't a 10/10ths car but it does have a bit of character mainly from the engine and the interior is lovely and a well screwed together place to be. Dunno whether its because its the new factor so being a bit more heavy footed but the R is so far worse on petrol than the TT, although hoping that will improve a bit now I've just cleaned the valves.
