Push close/open catch

My under stairs cupboard door is a bit janky but I don't want to replace it yet. It's slightly warped and the bottom part sticks out about 7mm.

The door is held closed by this crappy catch at handle height but it pops open really easily - even if someone walks up/down the stairs.

I'd like to replace the catch with something that holds the door closed with more force, and if possible have the catch at the bottom of the door which will push the warped end against the door jamb. And because I'd like it at the bottom of the door, it ought to be a press close and press open I guess (I'll add an aluminium kick plate).

Any suggestions please?

I suspect the spring has weakened in the catch leading to the problems you are having, you can pick up a replacement off ebay for a few ££'s, look for 'roller catch'

I need something conceptually stronger to hold the warped bottom of the door closed.

I wonder how strong this would be:




There are push close/open magnetic catches but I don't think they would hold the door closed. Well, they might but I feel like trying something mechanical first. The one above is cheapy cheap but there's probably good reason for that.

I have these on a cabinet. Doors are reasonably weighty solid timber and they hold fine with a satisfying action (more so than the original you're replacing).

That said, would a push to open be suitable for the application you have??

can you not just add another catch of the same type, i have found in the past that one isnt always enough.

They're not strong enough to hold the bottom of the door as I'd like it. I need something with a positive latch.

Thanks - I think I'll give them a try. I'm not 100% certain a push to open will be correct but I'm just after a cheap and easy solution for now.
