Was researching if there’s such a thing as OEM carbon fibre mirror arms and came across a Frank Stephenson video explaining how they designed out high-speed wind noise coming from the wing mirror arms using “diblets” - The five raised bumps on the mirror arms. Apparently, diblets can be found in nature on a sailfish tail. I’ll getmecoat

Yep I saw that interview too, interestingly the MSO carbon arms don’t have them though.

Thank you for introducing me to a new word, a new aerodynamic insight and the challenge of dropping it into every day conversation.
This is exactly the sort of post PH needs more of, rather than tedious speculation about future values. Excellent work thanks once again.

As the only reference I can find for Diblets and fish is this thread, I reckon he made the word up.

Yep, it makes a difference. When I had a TVR Tuscan, the TVR forums were more weighted towards projects and sharing of technical information. My 650S is being returned to factory spec (not much to do really) by Jack Webb Motorsport. Two front wings need repairing (paint bubbling), rear brake light replacement (condensation / intermittent fault), replacement of ‘o’ ring on hose at bottom of engine and replacement of back to front metal pipework that supply coolant to the two front Low Temperature Radiators (LTR’s) - quite a time consuming job necessitating the dropping of fuel tank. My ambition is to bring it up to the highest level of condition possible but without breaking the bank.

I’ll post up some pics and commentary as things progress.

Yep, you could be correct.

A school of Parrotfish is called a “dibley”. Maybe it’s where the inspiration for the 720S and Senna headlight sockets came from.

Maybe he meant riblets.

That does make a lot more sense, although a lot less fun.

BMW added these to their E46 3-series Coupe wing mirrors to reduce wind noise back in 1999. It's nothing new.

The E36 had them before that as pimples on the window side edge of the door mirrors.
