Bad.

It won't stop the butters who drink a skin full and still drive home. All it will serve to do is criminalise those who can handle a pint or 2 and still drive home safely.

Listen we can not have you talking common sense like this.
We need you to act like the op and soon we will not be able to do anything anymore as it will be to dangerous.

Bad. I agree with the above, it will neither affect habitual 'heavy' drink drivers, nor will it provide more cops to actually enforce the limit.

Bad: Also, note that in France between 50mg and 80mg penalty is much less harsh. Points and a fine.

Scots will ban you for 12 months at 50mg.........!

I don't drink or live in Scotland but am aware of the creeping interfence of THEM in my LIFE so this concerns me.

Has I suspect this has as much to do with being differnt to England and the SNP being all grown up and making its own laws as any scientific link to 'road safety' Next up will be a 50mph NSL for the poor Scots.

interesting proposal. 50 in blood is approximately 22 in breath. Vast majority of the EU has a 50 blood limit which the continentals prefer to express as a decimal. i.e. 0.05%. as mentioned above, being just over often means a fine and/or a short ban (28 days or so) in many places.

ETA. The present English limit is 35 in breath but you would not be charged or required to give blood if your lowest evidential breath test is under 40.

The suggestion of one pint putting you over the limit is a bit of a stretch of the truth. Come to that, so was the two pints for the 80mg limit.

There is a great deal of variation from person to person but I don't think anyone other than a dwarf female under 5 stone would get even near the limit.

In theory I don't mind a lower limit as I seldom have anything other than a soft drink when I drive anyway, so long as there's a reasonable safety margin to eliminate residual alcohol levels, mouthwash etc. I do despise pointless meddling however, So I'd be curious to see the rationale behind it beyond 'lower is better' thinking which has plagued things like speed limits etc, preferably backed up with some un-massaged data and statistics to prove it's a worthwhile decision worthy of the expenditure, and shows some empirical evidence that the roads will be a safer place because of this different level.

Otherwise I'd suspect it's pointless tightening of the law which has no bearing on those who drive when significantly over the limit that are the real problem. Or to put it a different way, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's some career politicians determined to stick their flag in the sand by making some arbitrary changes for changes sake to prove they're interested in making Scotland different from the neighbours...

Don't hold your breath. To a politician the end justifies the means and people can easily be paid to provide the 'evidence' to justify your proposal/existence/pension. Lower speed limits, passive smoking, global warming, ...

Probably a good thing, im one of the strange folk who can be legally under the limit and not fit the drive.

Agreed, I visit for a spot of 'speed tourism' (ref fluff) every year, awesome place to drive, fantastic scenery and people that just simply don't deserve their politicians. I guess that unless the commies slap the new Siemens avg speed scams all over the place any reduction will be as unenforceable as the current one smile

Agree. Silly unthinking lawmaking.

And, of course, increase the number of "morning after" breath test fails.

Perhaps the Scots have got the government they deserve?

Will the Scots be able to enforce this on the English ?

How can you have a different limit in Scotland to the rest of the UK ?

Do the Scots issue their own driving licences now ?

I could be caught and banned in one of the Eurozone countries, but still drive in all the others, as they cannot touch my UK issued licence.

I am also one of those that can be under the limit, but feel unfit to drive, I don't however resent those that can have a drink and drive ok.

Gretna will be like San Diego with peeps racing for the border.

I don't drink and drive, but if one pint is enough to put you over the Scottish limit, but under the English limit, is it better to run for the border?

I await to see how they are going to enforce a Scottish limit on a Swansea issued licence, we'll have different limits in different counties next !

Big deal...no one bothers when they lower a speed limit (until they get nabbed exceeding it that is) so why should anyone bother about lowering a different limit ....until of course they get nabbed exceeding it...

I wonder how many accidents are caused by people between 51 & 80.

It's my guess, and it is only a guess, that those that cause accidents are well in excess of 80 anyway, so just being higher over the limit will achieve what ?
