Nothing, if they are mature enough to use it properly. But maybe we should leave that for another thread eh?....
Are you the bloke she rang? Misdialling a couple of times is hardly crime of the century and doesn't warrant threatening abuse on an answerphone message (especially when it's clear it's a young girl).
Leave it out.

I'm just pointing out that life is full of sts and she just encountered one. The language used in the OP is no worse than what you might come across in a 15 rated movie these days... I'm not saying it's acceptable or how I would behave but tbh there are bigger things in life to get worked up about. Personally I'd be a bit embarrassed to be using Police resources on such a petty issue. Move on.

Without wanting to get too far off topic, in the bad old days kids still crank called, they just used phone boxes and landlines! I'm all for not giving phones to kids until they are old enough to use them responsibly, but I think secondary age is perfectly reasonable to have a phone. Just because we didn't have them as kids doesn't mean we should deny our kids out of a sense of luddite-ism!

Give your daughter a lesson in using a mobile telephone, if she can't work that out then she shouldn't have one.

12 Year olds can sound older and if the chap got a message and especially if his Mrs was with him then I don't blame him for venting.

He is the innocent party, you need to confiscate your daughters phone until she is mature enough to use one.

Although if anyone, regardless of age, phoned me at that time of the morning I'd prob not be too polite !!

hehe

I guess you are a little more direct than me, but yes I tend to agree with the thrust of your post.

Leave what out? My only beef was that 12 was too young for a mobile phone - don't see the issue really.

And hearing swear words in a film is a long way away from having abuse directed at you, especially as a 12 year old girl from an adult male. If the answerphone message is as Croyde suggests then it is quite clear that the phone belongs to a kid.

IMHO the bloke was out of order and a word from the police might make him think twice next time. On the plus side I bet Croyde's daughter will be a bit more careful about who she calls. If she's been off school ill she probably had better things to be doing at early o'clock than ringing random people and giggling down the phone at them...

Let's remove the emotive context of "young girl". It's hardly petty, DoubleSix. Here's an extract from the message the OP described:

I'm a big, hairy, overweight powerfully built 33 year old bloke. If a stranger left that message on my answer phone, I'd consider it sufficiently threatening that I would have no hesitation in contacting the police.

Good on you, OP. I hope that the stbag gets prosecuted.

I agree, I'd have done exactly what the op has done, if it had been my 12 year old daughter, completely unnaceptable behaviour by an adult.

Idiots do not listen to outgoing voicemail messages. Many of us have had detailed messages left by bingobrains about their paper orders, or whatever. They clearly switched off during the message that said "hello, this is [name]] etc".

Alright I hear what you guys are saying but just take your protective parent hats off for a minute and go back to my first point.

You don't know what is going on in other peoples lives, people who you've just phoned up out of the blue...

When I was 23 I lost my Dad in pretty horrible circumstances and for a number of years I was an angry young man. A coiled spring. It didn't take much to set me off and I often went overboard in my reactions to seemingly little things. I would also regret doing so shortly afterwards.

Who knows wtf is going on with this chap?? Just got back from Afghanistan?? Just lost his job?? Just try and get some perspective. Not everyone is fortunate enough to live in a suburban utopia.

If he was continuing to make these sinister threats I think we'd all be taking action. But he's left one stupid message and probably feels like a donut for having done so.

So if a girl/woman left a message on your phone at stupid o'clock and your Mrs picked it up/overheard or an astounded man gives it to her to listen to in case it is one of their friends having a laugh you would call in the police?

What planet do you live on?

I'm sorry for what happened to you and how you felt/behaved.

The Police aren't cretins (well most of them aren't), if there is a reason for his outburst(s), he'll just be told !

You cannot remove your protective parent hat .... it doesn't work like that, even when they become adults.

And it's doughnut ..... young man, pmsl (we do that too !)

cool

My first is due in Feb and I already feel protective! But I hope I will also maintain perspective and not open a nut with a hammer.

I agree the Police aren't cretins (but some of them are) and an inexperienced or overzealous PC could make a meal of it, even if you wouldn't. wink

One quip: "are you the bloke she called?". I wrote that because the whole thing seems to have made you really angry. I have no idea why. I have no quarrel with you, I was just questioning your assertion that 12 was too young for a mobile.

No it isn't, it's a lazy "Americanism", and part of trade name.

That doesn't even remotely resemble the context of what I've said.

If a strange bloke left a very angry, aggressive message on your phone saying if they find out where they'll live, they'll f*** you up, you wouldn't find it threatening? You wouldn't be unsettled by it? Not at all?

You might not do the same as I would, but calling the police isn't a over-the-top response to such an extreme message.

A little challenge for you, (a pointless one, but it is this stuff you remember).

Message me in 12 years time, especially if you and your wife have a little girl, and tell me the op is "over the top".

Nobody can tell you, or explain, what you're going to experience soon !

Good luck to both of you, and the new one when it arrives.
