It's a funny old business.

I am banned from the thread that discusses Timothy West and wosser name messing around in boats.

I said something like "isn't it time the pair of old duffers retired. They don't need the money, do they?"

And someone reported me for it!

I didn't even read the thread you're all relating to but I can guess who you're talking about. I really feel sorry for him, it must be awful when you have so little in your life that you need to troll the emergency services every time they post on a public forum.

Update!

Confirmed in post yesterday. Probation finished and diploma all done.

Best job in the world. Love coming into work every day (apart from earlies!). Something different every day.

COVID has made it a bit odd for the first year and a bit on squad. I’ve not really dealt with any night time economy on a weekend yet.

If anyone is thinking about it, go for it!

Fair play to you. I was put off being a police officer by the thought of coming into contact with the scrotes, mental healthers, depths of human depravity on a daily basis. As a general rule I try to avoid these groups so the thought of being forced to be in daily contact through work seemed like madness.

Great to hear. Enjoying the job you do is the best thing about being Old Bill. I used to ride a big motorbike to and from work. I used to look forward to going with anticipation of all sorts of unusual experiences and looked forward to going home, also anticipating all sorts of things. On top of that, in between I was riding a big motorbike. Great.

You have good periods and bad days in my experience. Don't let the latter get you down.

Bit harsh. Most of the other officers I worked with were nothing like that.

Likewise, had a cracking time over my 30yrs, working with some terrific officers - rarely had a time when I didnt feel like going in - enjoy your time.

I can't really post on a open forum but if you were young in service now <10yrs you'd sadly not agree.

It's okay on a night shift, dreadful on a late. You want that buffer between the end of NTE and finishing your shift. If you do a late shift that ends with NTE you invariably come across something at the last minute that means staying on.

Night time economy- traditionally officers who needed a bit more toughening up were sent to the city centre by each division to gain valuable experience..

I used to enjoy joint foot patrol in the town centre on a Saturday night with the local police when I was with RMP.

Oh, go on. Tell us. You know you want to.

When I got experience, I became more confident and felt almost 'at home' sort of thing at work. I fitted, and that was from 7 years in. I went through some rough periods, but you get them in any job.

I've dealt with some wonderful people. I've made friends of some of those I've dealt with.

A special treat was a woman recognising me 20 years after an incident, and thanking me for what I'd done. 20 years! I was with my wife at the time, and anything that boosts you in the eyes of your wife has got to be good.

I've worked in a close knit operational team. A man with a dirty great knife was attacking people, nearly killing one. When I and a colleague concentrated on first aid for the badly stabbed bloke - punctured lung, nicked artery - the others dealt with the offender. Us doing the first aid knew that the others would do everything, even putting themselves at risk, if the bloke came after us. Fabulous feeling. Also, knowing you'd do the same for them was equally good.

You enjoy your time, mate. Expect to get a bit hurt, expect to get a bit upset, expect to cry, expect bad dreams, but expect a fulfilling job.

Derek Im glad you had your time, it probably was a golden era where they were handsomely rewarded with good pay rises, looked after with canteens, and were largely respected and left alone to look after crime.

These days they go year after year without any inflationary rise, are constantly under the cost cutting umbrella where it's all about more with less and the cameraderie of the team has had its heart ripped out by single crewing, lack of staff and the pressure of dealing with everything, including stuff you're not trained for.

I accept that the boys and girls who are throwing themselves into it are brave and the majority do it for the right reasons, but they're not supported by the men and women above them who are only interested in scrimping and saving and putting forward their portfolio of Diversity and inclusion for the next promotion board.

To add - you have just served 2 years in the most absent of times when the public have barely been there. I hate to say it, but, I really do feel sorry for you. Best of luck to you, you will need it. The wake up call you are about to have if you stay will hit you like a ton of bricks. Make sure your family and those around you are ready for it.
