but the Shmart Mway link says "M4 junctions 3-12"
Those are different locations.
Fairly sure they're at the westbound junction 1 gantry, and also going eastbound too.
I just hope they're not yet working.

They have recently (last week) been installed just after M4 junction 3 Hayes, Eastbound into town, and run all the way to Junction 1 the end of the elevated section. Westbound heading out of town, they run from Junction 1, the start of the elevated section, all the way to the end of the elevated section where there is a freestanding yellow camera post. New signage has been put up this week on both the 60mph and the 40mph sections saying speed camera and average speed cameras in use. This is all very recent, so not sure if they are commissioned yet, but no doubt it won't be long. They do not appear on the Garmin (Cyclops) speed camera database yet.

Yup - I first spotted them a couple of weeks ago and posted a thred here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...They are the new average speed cameras - the old Gatso style ones are being removed (the one on the elevated section opposite the Sega building has already gone).
Basically, stick to the 60/40 limit from Heston right through to Chiswick Porsche! Outbound, they are on the gantries again, from just after Porsche through to the start of the M4.
Lots of people seem to be unaware. It can actually be quite dangerous now sticking to the limit (on a motorbike) for this section

Having done some searching, it comes under Highways England. I cannot find any information about it on their website, which I find odd as it effects over 90,000 people a day. You would expect some sort of public notice or announcement. I have written to them asking for more information.
I am not sure if they have completed the signage installation yet, as more have gone up all week, but the average speed zone signs need to be more prominent at the start and end of the zones. The cameras on the gantries are small and easily missed, also in heavy traffic signs at the side of the road can be blocked by other vehicles.

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety we are upgrading this section of the M4 from ‘spot’ speed cameras to average speed cameras. The existing cameras use outdated wet film processing which needs to be replaced and average speed cameras over a longer distance are much more effective in achieving speed compliance.
The cameras are being installed in both directions on the 40 mph speed limit section between junction 1, at Chiswick, and the end of the elevated section between junction 2 and junction 3, for Heston and also on the Londonbound 60mph speed limit section between junction 3 and the elevated section.
We are not making any changes to the speed limits, and the use of cameras to enforce the speed limit is not new either. The installation of average speed cameras is simply a technological improvement to this stretch of the M4.
Average speed cameras have been shown to encourage a better level of compliance with speed limits. They also help to reduce frustrating stop-start congestion by encouraging drivers to maintain a constant speed over longer distances compared to spot cameras. They are also safer and less disruptive to operate and maintain than the cameras they replace.
The cameras are yellow in colour and will have clear signage so that drivers know they are there.
We have been in consultation with Metropolitan Police who will be enforcing the speed limits over these sections of the M4.
The new cameras are due to become operational shortly, once installation, testing and commissioning has been completed.
Road safety of the travelling public and our workforce is of upmost importance to us. Drivers have a responsibility to keep to the speed displayed, and enforcement is one of a number of measures which are used to encourage compliance with the displayed speed limits.

I did 3 trips to work on my ZZR1400 before I noticed the gantry rigs going westbound; I saw the last camera at the bottom of Brentford flyover as the limit changes from 40 to NSL but thought they hadn't yet installed the cameras at the start. How wrong I was.
I've been nervously waiting for the post for the last week......

Thanks for posting that Humpy, my potential 'transgressions' were before that, so i'm fairly certain i'm clear and can relax about it Monday 3rd April

When they say 'in consultation with the Met', do they mean with actual cars patrolling, cos you barely ever see the po po just cruising about looking for speeders.
The signage does need to be a bit clearer though. The new cameras at junction one are tiny, on the gantry above and unless you had binoculars, you'd struggle to spot them whilst driving.
They have had the required effect though, almost all vehicles are now sticking to forty mph.
I am assuming the new cameras will only become operational when the little white 'tick' marks get painted on the road. Like the ones on the A40. I am assuming all this misery is a precursor to blanket limits for the ''smart motorway' roadworks. The DoT depot is going on a field near J 8/9 and it wants to comandeer this land for 10 years.
I don't think so. The cams are specs as far as I know, like the ones on average limited roadworks. No ticks there are there? Not sure. But they're different to the Siemens systems on the London routes, A40 / 406/ A2 & A316.
It doesn't make much difference to me, the times I use it achieving the limit is a luxury. I have complained though. It's the MLM airport limos and Addison Lee they want to clamp down on!

All of the new yellow gantries on the M4 inside the M25 in both directions have a post about 5-10 yards later with 4-6 black circular things on them, I believe these will be the lights that light up the tick in the dark as seen on the M40, though I could of course be wrong on their purpose.It doesn't make much difference to me, the times I use it achieving the limit is a luxury. I think I've seen the odd white spray mark on the road where a tick would be expected also.
Largely I don't have an issue with average speed cameras so long as they actually work. I had to use the M40 for a few months after those got put in and it did seem to help the traffic just move at a fairly constant pace with a +/-3mph speed delta for the most part.
These days I'm all M25, M4 or M40, and my time on those is on cruise at 70 (gps speed) anyway.
When I want to "drive" I'm usually in the S2000 and in green, rural and lacking in speed bumps, potholes, speed cameras and police, Worcestershire. Not slogging to work on the Octavia in London. Moving out was one of the best decisions I ever made.
