Can you explain why this is and/or how you know ? E.g. is it because they were film-based cameras and there's no budget for processing the film any more ?

There are only a few HADECS3 cameras installed in the section currently, so it does seem a bit surprising that there's not more automatic enforcement of the variable speed limit.
They all operate using radar and I have a radar detector in my car, so no radar alert means they aren't active.
Isn't this because there were only ever a small number of camera units which were/are moved around between housings, so, you might have a camera in Lane 4 at J10 one week, then a camera in Lane 2 at J3 another week? Not sure there's a reliable definitive "no cameras except HADEC" position currently?

Yes, that's correct.

There haven't been any active HADECS cameras on the gantries on the southern half of the M25 for many months now.

All new installations have been HADECS3 and not all of those have been or are active today.

The only sure way to know which HADECS or HADECS3 cameras are active at any one time is to use a radar detector.

Hmm, splitting hairs on the whole HADECS/HADECS3 thing - I meant (as I suspect you know) the side-mounted cameras which are relatively new.

But earlier in the thread you stated that "I can tell you all the gantry cameras from Heathrow to the Dartford Crossing are no longer operational, regardless of what colour they may be" which is somewhat at odds with what you replied above, agreeing that they are mobile. Could mislead people. Perhaps you simply haven't encountered any recently.

OK let me clarify as I may have worded previous posts confusingly.

Although I realise HADECS3s are mounted on gantries, when I referred to "gantry cameras" I was only talking about HADECS, which is the old system mounted above the carriageway, not to the side of it. Those HADECS cameras were only on one lane at a time and only on certain gantries, as you said. They are all switched off now.

The thread is about the HADECS cameras, so that's why I didn't feel the need to clarify earlier, but now HADECS3 has been brought up, it seems necessary.

Bit pricey still I think, given how old they are?

My friend drives down the m25 daily between junctions 14 to junction 24 and returns the same way.

He drives reguarly in excess of 80 mph through the cameras etc, and hasnt got a ticket at all. Dont think the cameras work tbh.

Dear Somewhatfoolish,

Thank you for your enquiry to CCC recorded below which has been forwarded to me.

The M25 speed enforcement system has been upgraded from HADECS2 & 2.5 to HADECS3 which have yellow casings and are mounted on the side of gantries and MS4s.
A Ministerial directive required that all working speed cameras would be yellow by October 2016.
Good to know!

I assume from this that can ignore gantry cameras on the M1 etc as well smile

Thanks for the update. smile

As an M25 user, worth being a bit wary. There are also HADECS 3 cameras next to some of the signboards (that display info/variable limits), not just next to the gantries. I cannot remember if they are all labelled with camera signs, but certainly easier to miss.

For your info the "signboard" you refer to is an MS4 as mentioned in the Highways England note above.

Those must be the ones I see on the Berkshire section of M4. They look as if they are viewed through a lens with chromatic aberrations! I though my eyes were going until I saw a 'normal' one.

Yes.

Turn up in court and play the right tune and it's 6 points and a fine

Best to stay <95 when passing HADECS3s on the M25 if there's no VSL showing.

Followed a car today past the same camera which got you. The VSL was showing 40 and I'd say they went past at around 50-52. That resulted in a couple of flashes and no doubt a letter in the post to the driver.

Keep 'em peeled...
