Not sure if this is 100% the correct section, but I found this funny.

Last week I sold my RX8 to a scrap dealer in Hull. Today I got home from work to a letter saying it had been seized in London by the Met Police! On phoning the scrap dealer, just as a courtesy, it seems they'd already moved the car on (before getting the V5 through....). On the day it went I SORN'd it, so I doubt the new owner would have been able to tax it. Also my insurance was taken off that day too.

On the letter it says "In due course the driver will recieve correspondence from the Police regarding the offence itself"

So what do we think they've been up too; robbery, drug running or just failing to tax and insure the car?

Thankfully I have a signed and dated receipt from the scrap dealer. So its not my problem.

You sold it to a scrap dealer... How buggered was it?

I'm wondering if the car seized in London wasn't actually "your" car, just the identity of it on a hooky one.

So what did the Police arrest you for? smile

Car was a runner, bodywork needed work. However I needed it gone and the scrap yard offered me twice what I could get for trade in. RX8's arn't worth much sadly.

Similar thing happened to me. I traded in a a 7 series to a dealer in central Scotland. I got a call from police in the north east of England stating they have seized my car as it was parked on the street, untaxed and uninsured. Told them i sold it but had to get a letter from the DVLA stating that they no longer had an interest in me as the owner.

I suspect it was shipped for auction and parked on the street until it was ready to go through. Bad timing but i never heard anything back.

I would assume the keeper-change confirmation letter would suffice for that...

Me too, but the only thing I think i made a mistake on is not tending to that myself. It was all filled in and the dealer said they would send it all away with the next batch. Lesson learned.

Then you'll still be liable for any offences that apply to the registered keeper (no VED etc)(

It clearly says on the form that the seller should send it in, having filled in the name and address of the new keeper.
Which is of course completely at odds with what any dealer wants - they want the lowest possible number of registered keepers on the history.
I have no idea how they get around this one legally.
I had it happen the last time I sold a car to a dealer. I got a speeding ticket a month later.
This was back in 2003, and fortunately the police believed me when I sent back the summons with the name of the dealer on it.

Simple. They read the V5C properly, all of it.

Specifically, they read the bit that describes using the yellow V5C/3 to notify DVLA that it's gone into the motor trade...

I have even got in the habit of writing the time I sold the car since I had an issue where a car I sold was flashed 1/2mile from my house as the new owner drove it away!

Didn't realise it could be done on line. I did SORN it straight away, just so I could get some tax back of it, and so I could take my insurance off of it.

I've not heard anything from Met Police yet.

I ways get a photo of the logbook before I send it off too. That way if it gets lost in post or something you have the purchasers address.

Someone who bought a car from me flashed a camera, then ignored me when I told txt him that a fine came through and asked him for his address.
Little did he know I already had it. Bet he thought he'd got away with it.
