Private plate- taking off trade in to put on new

Whats the latest procedure for dealing with personalised plate when trading in a car with it on it, and wanting to put it on new "second hand" car?

Do you need to put existing car back to normal plate, get new V5 before trading in and then re-apply to put it on new one once you have the new car's V5?

Or is there a more streamlined process nowadays?

I have looked online to https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number and this reads as if you could basically sit with your phone in the dealers and fill out the first form, then the second form, and that would be you?

Anyone done this recently?

Think it's just about instant online thesedays providing you have all the necessary documents, MOT, tax etc in place for both vehicles. There should be some hell online.

The dealer will want an accurate v5 so do it 10 days before you px putting your plate on retention.
It's instant to put the plate on your new car though.
