I've seen this in a few places now down the M6 and M5. Sometimes its used as a repeater in the variable speed limit section but sometimes it is illuminated before any limit change via the ganteries. Namely on the M5 around Glouster in the new "smart motorway".

Obviously some limit signs are advisory like the 50 with the flashing beacons or the square signs saying "max 50" etc round bends and such like, but the one above concerns me, one its the official symbol of a limit sign and 2 there are Hadecs 3 cameras bolted to the side. However I'm going for no, they're not enforceable for no other reason than the numbers are yellow and not white. But its nice to be sure.

IFAIK if it's in a red circle, it's mandatory and can be enforced.

This

The flashing yellow signs are advisory. If it has a red circle around it then its to be obeyed

When the font, colours or size are not compliant with the law, then they change the law so the signs are enforceable. I always wondered why NSL on a motorway is white diagonal band on black background, the absolute opposite of a real NSL sign. Guess it's still enforced though frown

Drove down the M5 from Brum to Bristol last week and even though not very busy these were all set at 50MPH for what appeared to be no reason whatsoever. Do they actually vary or is this a permanent thing?

Why not have a look at your updated copy of the highway code??

It's presumably reduced speed limits by stealth. Over time, all motorways will have them and they can happily be on at 50 or 60 forever. Based on congestion, pollution, noise, cracks in the pavement, possession of...

That one took me a minute to figure out... I have honestly never noticed that the gantry matrices display a colour-inverted derestrictor before, i even had to google a picture!
As above, it'll be in the more recent highway code editions (along with changes in the law).

I have wondered the same as the OP, but for a different reason.

I thought there had to be two signs, one either side of the carriageway , for a speed limit change.

Have they altered that rule too ?

There's a road near me which was a dual carriageway with a 60 limit.

They're doing works there and it's now down to 1 lane and 30 even though the actual works are not 24 hours the speed limits are. There's only 1 sign on the RHS of the road.

Then on the other side of the barrier going in the opposite direction. Again it was a 60, now a 30 but with the sign on the RHS again. Then no derestrictor signs at the end. When it has this sign does that mean speed back to 60 or still at 30? Are the 30 signs even legal?

EDIT: I see a post has been made to answer the signs on only one side of the road.

I have also seen it written on here that the road works types also consider that they don't need to tell us when the limit returns to normal, end of works is sufficient.

Largely I think they just want us to stop driving, and to achieve this they are going to constantly change the rules so they can ban all of us.

First sentence is correct.

Second sentence is probably correct. But where would all the tax revenues then come from?

The 50 limit is on for 'technology reasons' (whatever that means). They have been testing the cameras, but how long it will last is anybody's guess.

Between J2 & J1 on the M5 there is a temporary 40mph limit due to the roadworks. Exiting J1 northborthbound (which is still within the limit) about three quarters of the way up they have placed NSL signs to end the restriction, then about thirty yards after them comes the permanent 30mph signs for the traffic island. Why the derestriction signs ?

Where did you see that? Genuinely interested - I'm a "road works type" and I wasn't aware of that. Been a few years since I was on the tools though, it may have changed in the interim - I'm not a fan of the new TSRGD so have avoided it as far as I can.

Usually use something like this:

Wotevs. Us road works types be PHers too. One of my colleagues (woman in her mid-40's) has got an R8, another has built a bdized lightweight MGB, another lad has a ridiculously luxurious XJ-L. We are not all bus wkers.
