Few ideas....

1. Heavily chain yourself to the bike, so if they want your bike, they have to accept potential kidnapping charges as well.

2. Try blinding them - it would be difficult but if you could somehow cover their helmet,in quick succession, with strips of duct tape obstructing their view, this would surely piss them off and would be hard to remove with gloves. Maybe have a built in duct tape dispenser on the side of the bike?

3. Try putting them off from taking your bike - carry a bag of your own faeces and if it comes to it, just smear it all over your bike.
Or carry a bottle of matured urine and spray them with it. Back in secondary school someone left a bottle of piss in an unused locker in our class room, we stupidly decided to play football with it after a good three or four months and it exploded everywhere when someone drop kicked it. It was horrific.

4. Try confusing them - when they attempt to steal your bike, quickly puncture your own tyres, then attempt to steal theirs instead.

5. Claim you accidentally mistook them for cute baby seals, which led to their maiming by your handy seal club.

Slight problem with the duct tape one. They normally wear open face helmets and remove them as soon as the police approach as the police cant chase riders with no helmets.

Maybe duck tape the helmet on then the police will be forced to follow them..

Awareness of surroundings, leaving suitable gaps when stationary in case you need to 'move off' in a hurry

that's the sensible options..

not so sensible would be having one of these to hand for squirting in the eyes...

Not sure how much a defense 'it must have rolled out my shopping bag' would be when questioned though...
Almost an irony to be defending yourself from an acid attack with citric acid.
This is why I love Pistonheads.

Deep heat supposed to be rather bothersome to the eyes isnt it? Comes in mini handbag size for the ladies er sports injuries too.

Telescopic wheel wrench is a usefull and perfectly legitimate thing to have in the car.

Here in Poland its fairly normal to carry a Telescopic baton and a can of CS spray in the car, (My wife and nearly all female family members carry pepper spray in the car and you can buy it from any convenience store)

I bought myself "Tourist kit" from the local discount supermarket and although looking intimidating was pretty useless.

6d Maglite will have to do along with a torque wrench however I would have no idea how to use it if I had to.

Unfortunately in the UK, the law treats most of these sprays the same way as if you were armed with a gun.

That's why I always carry a couple of these:

And one of these:

Yes, I get some odd looks when I'm walking down the street with a grapefruit in each pocket, but I feel a lot safer.

One in each trouser pocket?

No chance anyone would give you any bother if you did.

Rob someone using a moped in my country and see what you get:

https://youtu.be/czg6fv-uNSw

As I recall these guys stole a handbag from a lady walking along the road. Got caught by the locals. Guys in black t-shirts with radios are village security.

We pay a small sum a month (about £2.50) which goes the the local Banjar. This is kind of a community organisation who look after security, parking etc.

Generally speaking the Police will let the thieves get a good shoeing then step in. No penalties for those administering the kicking, unless they got the wrong people.

Crime rate is fairly low (except during Ramadan, when you need to keep your gate locked etc) and murder rate (for Indonesia overall) is about half that of the UK.

Gun crime is very low. I think there were two shootings last year - they really shocked the nation. Unfortunately for one set of thieves with guns they tried to rob the house of a senior naval officer - he was armed. Shot and killed one of them then his neighbours caught the other two and beat the st out of them - think they died.

We had one fatal stabbing here a month or two ago - big news and the Police have set up a new task force to crack down on gangs of teens going round on mopeds committing nuisance and street crime.

Made me laugh as it said officers will be unarmed (police here are not routinely armed) but must be over 5' 5" to join the new unit....tall guys then! They've brought in some judo experts as well to help them brush up on arrest techniques.

At least they're trying to do something about it though....

Here's one more:

https://youtu.be/t_zFgC4v1w0

Guy steals phones using his moped. Gets caught by security - state of his face!
He's very likely to get five years in prison.

Almost all humans fault to respond when suddenly under attack.

By far the most effective means of defence is to not put yourself in the position of being seen as the preferred target in the first instance.

That means simple things such as leaving a good gap at all times when coming to a stop. Using your air conditioning and not having a window open. Not overtly displaying items such as watches or phones. Avoiding areas where you or your vehicle stand out from the background. And remaining basically aware, when coming to a stop or when stationary of what is happening in your vicinity.

Just basic common sense helps to ensure they don't select you as their target but someone else and avoids you ending up involved in a violent confrontation and it's aftermath. These people do have a selection process and the key is to simply ensure you do not fit it by doing a few very simple things none of which involve weaponry or transforming into Steven Segal at the drop of a hat.

I've lived in London all my life and as the son of a jeweller was always aware of basic and simple security. Violence and crime (with the exception of racism) has been something I've always seen inflicted on others not myself in 44 years of moving freely around on foot, bike, bus, tube, taxi and car.

Almost everyone who ever becomes a victim to these people has a superior brain to their attackers but has made the conscious decision to not use it to their advantage. These are simple humans, fundamentally lazy, poorly educated and below average IQ. They operate according to basic selection criteria. The key is to aim to not be outwitted by a retard in the first instance.

Perhaps attach a length of fishing line to the phone with a small weight on the end.

Moped rider grabs phone and rides off, weight drops on ground along with length of fishing line flailing behind = chaos happens smile

Having done a lot of business in countries with predominantly muslim population, the security bods often raise the issue of people getting "hangry" during ramadan. Hypoglycemia can result in the fasters making poor life choices.

Buy a cheap phone or a 'phoney',
duct tape razor blades to the underside,
tether the phone to the car with fishing line,
leave on view on dashboard with window open,

It's a big thing with Muslims here to go back to their home town or village and give cash to relatives, especially to kids..nephews, nieces etc.

Many would rather not return than go empty handed. So it kicks off a massive crime wave of mostly petty theft. Anything they can nick they will - hence we start locking the gate.

Helmets go missing, clothes off lines, bag snatching goes up, bike theft goes right up etc.

The Police set up random road blocks and the security at ports (many will be taking the ferry across to Java) is tightened. Can't prove you own the bike - you ain't taking it on the ferry!

Happens every year and peaks just before Idul Fitri.

I live in Indonesia but it's a predominantly Hindu population in my neck of the woods so never experienced your 'hangry' issue.

See my answer above.

However Jakarta likes to celebrate Ramadan with pitched street battles between rival gangs - which is nice.

I'm sure the father is mightily impressed when the son returns from the big city with an old pair of women's kacks and a handbag. biggrin

It's like the big rob before Christmas. Can't have little Shardonney KFCbargainbucket Madgestie the Third going without a new Black and Decker work mate and cordless power drill on Christmas morning's festive lucky dip.

They sell the stuff, for cash.

It is a huge petty crime wave!

On the moped theme though; last year we had some guy attacking women late at night in the capital here in Bali. He would pull up next to them at traffic lights and then slash their leg with a blade.

All the ladies were wearing standard uniform here of cut off denim shorts. So people think it's either a pervert thing or he's a Muslim unhappy with ladies driving around with legs on show at 02:00.

After third incident a few days later the papers have the Police commander on front page with a squad of hard looking officers behind him.

He is saying this is unacceptable and here is the group that is now looking for you. The next lady you attack maybe a decoy officer. We will not stop until we catch you and my team here are authorised to shoot you if you try to escape. Prepare yourself to spend the next twenty years in jail.

The attacks stopped. No repeat since.

Also there was one earlier in the year where some guy fell off his bike and people saw a group of young guys stop to help him. Only they in fact took his watch, wallet, phone and drove off on his bike. Again much outcry as people here pride themselves on being kind and helping others etc.

Police caught up with them a few weeks later. One was 17 years old and treated as a youth so rehabilitation course in a youth prison thing; think like our old Borstals. He is young he should have a chance to mend his ways etc..is the view.

The others were in their twenties, they got (as I recall) seven years each.

So for helping themselves to an injured guy's possessions they'll spend most of their twenties in prison.

Harsh? Unfair? That's a long sentence, although you can get time off for being a model prisoner, showing real contrition etc.

How much would I get in the UK for snatching a phone off someone?

Anyway, just a snapshot from a developing country. Form specific squads to deal with specific issues, warn the criminals we are coming after you: you are our focus. Put criminals away once they have reached an age they should know better.
