Severn Bridge Toll to be Scrapped
Discussion
Toll charges on the Severn Bridge will be abolished by the end of next year, which can only be good news -
unless you're a toll booth employee.
Some suggest it's a smokescreen to cover up the announcement about no electrification of the rail lines, but the toll going should help both business and tourism in the area.
Is this the right time to glance over at the Dartford Crossing?

Whilst it's good news for business in Wales, there will still be ongoing maitenance costs. I was watcing documentary on the Forth road bridge last night - £16m to build in 1964 but has since cost £250m+ in maintenance and improvements. So the money will still have to come from somewhere.unless you're a toll booth employee.

Maybe they could use some of the tens of billions the Treausry takes from motorists...?!TEKNOPUG said:
Surely removing the M6 toll will remove the beneft of using it?
Yes, but then it will remove the resistance for those who do not currently use it - freight and the motoring masses - thereby adding instantly to capacity in the region and removing a huge burden from the M6.It's not a win-win scenario, but it's probably the best compromise. Next up they should be adding extra lanes to the M42 north of the M6 and also upgrading/by-passing the A34 from Stoke to Birmingham. The UK desperately needs road infrastructure investment to increase economic efficiency.

for anyone that has paid at the tolls the best part is flooring it along the big wide section that follows, no doubt that'll be taken away

I haven't looked for a while but the M6 Toll usage stats were insane - it was steadily running at half the expected number of vehicles. I suppose at least it will wear out much more slowly than expected.TEKNOPUG said:
I meant from the driver perspective. If you remove the toll, surely it will just fill up with traffic and jams and journey times will be increased?
Absolutely. But they could do more - I guess that means reduce the price - to encourage greater use. I don't like paying £5.50 - and I can claim it back!Sheepshanks said:

If it is anything like the Forth Road Bridge when they stopped charging, there were roadworks for about 6 months while they took away the old huts and barriers. Something to look forward to...for anyone that has paid at the tolls the best part is flooring it along the big wide section that follows, no doubt that'll be taken away
