Hello,

I'm asking for a friend who wants a change from his 2010 Mondeo Estate. The requisites are:

  • Diesel
  • 150bhp+
  • About the same size as the Mondeo Estate
  • As engaging drive as possible
  • Economical - 50 ish mpg
  • Budget £9000
Any ideas would be much appreciated!! I know it seems silly trading in a car for something so similar to what he already has, but this Mondeo has given him loads of trouble over the past couple of years.

Thanks guys, didn't think of the Skoda. Does anyone have any experience with the Mazda 6? Seem to be well kitted for the price compared to the Germans.

The Le Mans cars do indeed look very tasty. A chap in my street has one, and I covet it. smile

As others have said, the BMW 5-Series is a good choice, too. I think the 3-Series would be too small for your mate, if he's used to a Mondeo (they are HUGE these days).

Another option is the Skoda Superb estate. I've only ever heard good things about them, and the boot is utterly enormous.

Lastly, no "Which estate?" thread would be complete without mention of the Volvo V70.

There, I said it. Volvo V70. biggrin

Octavia is a little bit smaller than the Mondeo, if size is an issue then the Supurb is available with the same engine and less shouty bodywork than the Octavia

I would have said said a Mondeo but I'm guessing your friend doesn't want another.

So you can get a 63 plate Mazda or a 10 year old BMW !
I run a 62 plate 520D and have just bought a 66 plate Mazda 6 because it is close enough to the 520 and I could have only got a 2 year old 520 for that money.

Fuel, the Audi A6 with its revised post VW scandal a friend says is slow and he now struggles to get low 40s mpg. The 520 averages about 47mpg and the Mazda inspite of a Euro 6 engine gives 45.
No way will you see 50+ unless you spend a long time cruising at 50-60.

Drive wise the BMW is the more sporting drive feels more fixed to the road. The Mazda is more powerful and quicker but hampered by front wheel drive
