I was going to post this in General Gassing but can't really be bothered somehow starting a debate about leasing/Nurburgring lap times/overtaking; willing to hold out for a sensible answer.

Anyway, I'm going to change the rear silencer and tail pipes on my car but want to keep the originals. In terms of storage, will I be okay to clean, dry, wrap and keep in the (pretty dry) shed without any risk of rust, corrosion, etc.?

Cheers.

Keep them up in air Horsemeat !

Maybe hang them from the rafters in the garage that type of thing
Most of the rot they suffer is only from condensation from rapid engine temperature change so you should not see much deterioration

The best place is the airing cupboard but not many of us can get away with that

I know what you mean about posting in the main forum nobody gets more P££££d off than me about it and they call it a car forum !

There might be some merit in giving them a coating of simething decent like ACF50 before you tuck them away.

Hang them up to give any water inside the boxes a chance to drain out.

Internal corrosion is from the water & other nasties generated by burning fuel - petrol or diesel - and on cars used mainly for short journeys is the main reason their exhausts rot quicker than cars used for long journeys due to the exhaust not getting hot enough to boil the water off.

Same cause applies for the mayo you may find in the oil filler cap which is not the sure-fire indicator of hgf that many seem to think it is.

Some boxes now come with a small hole in the lowest point to allow water to drain & for years I've put a small hole in silencers - around 1 to 2mm - for that reason. Never had an issue at MoT time.
