Do police make random vehicle stops after midnight, just on the off chance of catching people doing something dodgy?

Nope, it's sadly well known that criminals have free reign after midnight to go about their business.

Surely anyone out after midnight is up to no good.

Don't they turn into pumpkins at midnight?

Yes they do, you really shouldn't be on the road after midnight.

The same way cars should be scrapped when they reach 100k.

I think they stop people with no valid reason some of the time

Driving a car on the road is a valid reason.

I got really annoyed when they followed me for ages and eventually stopped me.

Young lad in a Golf R out at 2am. Assumed it was stolen.

They followed me until they confirmed other units around and then stopped me cos they thought it might be stolen. Couldn't stop me before confirming back up because they said if I failed to stop there was no way they'd be catching me without help.

Understood. Thanked them for looking out for me. This was by a metropolitan police traffic BMW! Very rare sight these days.

I get followed a lot especially if I am seen late at night. But I don't mind. I Got followed yesterday by a Police van. Eventually they got bored as when I pulled up outside my house they drove past.

I have been stopped twice in recent years early morning, once at 2am and another time at 04.30 ish, asking me to verify my name etc and said there had been several thefts of my make of car recently so were just making sure I wasn't driving a stolen car.

They were very polite, very professional and I was on my way within minutes, and if it had been my car that had been stolen I would have been very grateful of it being recovered.

Easy to knock the police, damned if they do.........................

I would be very surprised if an officer couldnt come up with a valid reason. Now on yer way.

Police dont randomly stop people unless a some form of traffic check point is set up - checking for vehicle roadworthiness / drink drive.

For them to stop you on the road there will be a reason, which you will be told when they speak to you.

Yep, had this regularly when I was 21 back in 2011....

E92 BMW 335i when the key cloning theft was a real problem, my GF lived near Lewisham and I'd regularly be out late at night...

Worst record was being stopped 3 times in 30 hours, the policeman who stopped me at midnight in Lewisham was the same one that stopped me at 5am the next morning when dropping my little brother to work

Actually they DO stop people for spurious reasons particularly in the middle of the night

Well just laugh then.

Going too slow; classic DUI sign.

This.

Doesn't seem to happen much to me anymore but between 17 and 21 (when i bought a house in the centre of a City meaning that I almost always walked for my nights out) I had almost got to the point of being of first name terms with most of the local coppers.

I would regularly be driving around towns and the local city, stone cold sober, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights either with a car full or sometimes just on my own.

Sometimes I was stopped with reason (one memorable one was being told my licence and my tyres would last a lot longer if i didn't drift round roundabouts in the early hours...), sometimes because "Why young lad in a brand new 190 2.6 / 328i / M3" or whatever I had borrowed that night, and sometimes just because Police Officer needed to stretch their legs.

Always amusing when they had a new recruit and i was in my own car as I have always been polite, respectful, but firm with authority, especially when it is inconveniencing me without good reason to do so. Almost without fail the newbee would be told to go over my car for a full check by the senior officer - I didn't care because my tyres were always good and the car was always in tip top mechanical condition but it was a test for them - If they didn't spot that the reg on the windows didn't match the plate they would get a bking for not looking hard enough and if they did mention it without mentioning that they thought i should be fine though as the private plate matched my name they would get a bking.

The Police ALWAYS have a reason to stop someone, if that is a logical or sensible is often a different conversation.

I was stopped when driving home from working odd hours in my Puma when it was almost new.

I was also stopped once in my Fiesta RST ,during the time when RSs were stolen every 5 minutes.
