I've not been stopped for over 40 years and on the rare occasions I was out in the middle of the night I never saw any police cars. Prior to that i was stopped twice for minor offences.

I was stopped on the A64 Malton by-pass shortly after midnight in late January 2010.

I'd seen a police van join the dual; carriageway near Malton shortly after I passed the entry slip road, and they started following me. After a short time their blue lights came on so I pulled into the next lay-by, got out of the car.and went to see what their concern might be.

They merely remarked that I was driving unusally slowly for a dual carriageway (my speed had been about 55-60 mph) so I explained that I had a long way to go (I was heading for Surrey) but had plenty of time so was making it a leisurely trip.

I suppose they suspected I was driving slowly because I was drunk, but they made no move to carry out a breath test, and obviously they were quite happy with the situation. The whole thing was quite civilised and easygoing, and I was under way again within a minute ot two. Mind you, this was North Yorkshire Police, and I must say in all my (admittedly limited) contacts with them they have always behaved in a polite and civilised manner.

Weirdly, I have never been stopped for no reason. I've always been doing something to justify it.

Driving a car on the road is a valid reason.
Indeed.

Although I can't imagine many officers get any time to do such things these days, especially in smaller forces / those disproportionately hit by cuts.

Aye, more one for units that get the time for proactivity really.

That's not laughable, most people in the early hours will make reasonable progress, driving slow is a classic indicator of drink driving

Up until Feb of this year I regularly travelled to/from work in the early hours, last time I was pulled over the officers were driving a Sherpa van !

My first car was a van. Bedford HA....based on the Viva.
When driving home after dropping girlfriend off I used to ger stopped. No issues. Van in the early hours so to be expected. Usual questions about where been, going, drinking, carrying in back.
The same copper stopped me but after about 4 stops he just used to wave to me.
Years later his son and mine were schoolmates and we had some laughs about it. He left the police to become a full time snooker referee appearing on all the top events on TV.

One of the drunkest drivers I ever stopped was driving down a main road in Bristol in the small hours at 10mph.

Someone out there is posting a thread moaning that the Police would've probably caught their stolen car if they had been out stopping cars they believed to be suspicious. They truly can't win.

Well just laugh then.

Going too slow; classic DUI sign.
The likes of you are turning everybody into wannabee drunks by the look of it.

I had the opposite experience- used to do the same journey, early hours of the morning, alternate nights me driving in a Saab 96 (showing my age here!) and a mate driving a Mini. Frequently stopped in the Mini ('is this car yours, sir?'), but never in the Saab. And the Saab was generally driven faster, thanks to dreams of being Stig Blomqvist.

I think it is possible they just get bored.

Many, many years ago we used to get stopped late at night by officers of the south Welsh constabulary while making our way back in our Bedford Dormobile from gigs at the rugby clubs up in the valleys. Three scruffy yobs in a beat up van. Inevitable really.

The torch would shine in, highlighting the ends of amplifiers and microphone stands in the back, while we told them where we had been playing. Then usually a nice little conversation about how well it went and how far we had to go, take care, etc. All very friendly really.

Meanwhile all three of us desperately trying not to let our eyes stray towards the great big plastic bowl over the interior light on the ceiling of the van, which was crammed full of all the stuff you wouldn't want the gendarmes to discover.

The rest of the time they haven't been able to keep up .Fnar .

They're following you right up the chuff in an umarked police car.
You don't speed up to make a gap, so you aren't breaking the speed limit.
They can't do you for speeding now, so they pull you in the hope of getting you on something else.

Scumbags are about in the early hours.

About 5 years ago I set off for Scotland at 4am , van towing a trailer , I'd forgotten to get my satnav out of the glovebox so pulled over at the side of the road

I noticed a car stop about 50m behind me but thought nothing of it as there's a postbox there

Then the car pulls alongside me , guy driving , woman in the passenger seat , she motions me to open the window so I do, she asks if I'm lost with an Irish accent , at this point I say no and drive off , as I do I see the driver swear ,they followed me for about 1/2 a mile until we got to a set of lights which changed to green as I approached but I had no intention of stopping.

I think they'd dropped somebody off 50m behind me who was making his way up the inside but I didn't see anyone in the dark

A few weeks later same time of the morning 2 coppers stopped me to check me out as the high back seats made it look like 3 people were in the van so they are about looking for the thieving nocturnal scumbags

Around our way you hear the short burst of sirens alot. Friends left our house late after dinner once and within 300m's they were pulled.

I've zero issues with this. How many drug/DUIs do you think there might be post pub chucking out time risking driving home?

If I was pulled I'd see it that they were doing their job not dodging work sat somewhere quiet till the end of their shift.
