That's because they're give way lines not stop lines...

I thought stop lines were usually because the visibility isn't good? If you can really see clearly from several meters back then surely it should be a give way.

The law is clear - you MUST stop AT the stop line.
That isn't true, when you do your motorbike test they encourage you to not stop if you can see that the way is clear
If you don't stop at the STOP line on test (bike, car,LGV,PCV) you'll get a serious/dangerous fault & fail.

If it's a STOP you have to stop in turn at the line. Having stopped a couple of car lengths previously, or 100 yards back, or somewhere in the previous village is not relevant. Only if it is a GIVE WAY can you follow the previous car out without risk of a pull.

Stop AT the line. I can't think of a single stop sign where the visibility would be good enough to reliably say the road is clear from 20 feet back from the line.

And in France, I'd suggest going as far as popping the hand-brake on at a stop line - they can be st-hot on that there.

I always think the 4-way stops they have in the US would be fun here. I went with my boss once, an impatient man at the best of times, and he didn't get it all - he couldn't understand why you'd wait, so he didn't! Was a nightmare.
