Police in France catching bad drivers with a drone and motorcycle combination, relatively cheap motorway policing?

They are not spying on us.

They are observing them.

(from Cambridge English Dictionary) spy meaning, definition, what is spy: a person who secretly collects and reports information about the activities of another - I see the video and say the police are doing just that - spying!

Them and us? aren't we all drivers of vehicles, I only posted it as I thought UK Police may see it as a cost effective way of policing bad driving.

I'm afraid most drone stuff seems to me like big boys playing with toys, desperately seeking vaguely connected uses for them to justify playing with them in work time.

I'll exclude sensible stuff from my swaging generalisation, like wildlife programs and genuine aerial photography etc..

Apart from the few skilled pro's (Older boys with toys and some experience) most operators seem to crash them into the nearest tree/human/obstruction.

Perhaps in 20 years when they are autonomous and have +/-1m gps and ten times the capacity batteries they might start to be useful beyond playing ..

It is a nonsense to assume an activity can be private if it happens in public place. If a person could observe the same activity, then what is the problem. Is a UAV significantly different from a patrol car 'hiding' on a slip road?

The issue that would raise concerns for me, is using technology to subvert any reasonable expectations of privacy, for example equipped with microphones capable of listening through walls, or IR cameras looking inside homes.

Mummy didn't buy you the drone you wanted for your birthday, did she frown

Calm down, it won't happen here.

If you were that concerned about it then it would be trivial to block their control and video signals if they use the standard DJI kit as shown in that video.
Maybe that will be the next laser/radar detector market segment - kit to detect and block RF control and video transmission signals used for RC stuff.

We had a problem wiin h to he roof on our 3 story house. Building insurance guy turned up with a. See with a drone in it. Rather than climbing up on the roof or messing around with a long pole he just chucked a drone up, took. A load of pictures and video for his report and off h went.

The key word in that definition is "secretly".

The police are quite open about the use of drone, hence the news report, and also the apparent bad drivers are stopped there and then to be issued with fines, etc.

Would it be any different if the police were on an overhead bridge and observing the traffic from above instead of using a drone?

Does this sould like the police are acting "secretly"? It doesn't to me, therefore it is not spying.

In principle is this any different to CCTV?

If it helps the Police do their job and it saves the taxpayer money then it sounds great.

Police spying? lol

No just using a tool to gather evidence. The same as a police officer stood on a bridge or CCTV looking for the same thing.

Drones will never be used like this in the UK though. There are strong cases for their use for jobs like mispers, poaching etc though where vast parts of rural land need to be searched.

Police Scotland have already started using drones - they are of valuable assistance in search and rescue situations - e.g. people getting lost on hills etc, and for scouring areas after runway crims.

I'm guessing the runaway crims aren't too happy about this...... hehe

Possibly the most disingenuous statement on earth. I do hope used tongue in cheek as the alternative is too depressing to think about.
