You don't need to be poor. My brothers sky system has just died. In weighing up the options he came to the realisation that he doesn't ever watch live TV, yet he's paying for sky and a TV licence at about £70 per month combined. He already has prime so is adding netflix and dumping sky.
My kids don't watch broadcast TV either. Social media has taken over as their main entertainment platform, followed by spotify. When they do watch TV it's something on demand. Waiting for a specific day and time to watch a program is just alien to them!
Even my mother (80) is hooked to netflix/YouTube/streaming. She mainly watches one of the US news channels (she is hooked on US politics/trump). If it wasn't for coronation street she wouldn't need a licence.
Interesting you should say that, my parents are 70, and in the last year have cancelled their ancient Sky package and I got them a couple of new Freesat boxes, which have Netflix and all the other streaming services built in.My kids don't watch broadcast TV either. I was fairly suprised to see them use streaming as quickly as they did.
Here we are nearly 12 months later, and they cheerfully tell me that they barely watch any live TV anymore, but just watch what they want via streaming when they sit down for a couple of hours on an evening.
They are hooked on various Netflix productions like The Crown.
Yes, it was a lazy evening! There's so much decent content out there that is far more compelling and interesting than anything being put out by the BBC.

Not sure if serious, but if you are, then those are really daft things to say as is a lot of this thread.
Other than being fun forum fodder it's not a big deal.

It was the bit that said I'll just pay up as I don't want letters and visits that got me.Other than being fun forum fodder it's not a big deal.

So can everybody who doesn't pay the licence hand on heart say they watch nothing live?

Yep. I don't have a licence - I don't even have an aerial plugged in. The only thing I ever watched on iPlayer was PMQs and I live without it.
Never considered that.. It and Parliament should be free on a seperate platform or log in if necessary IMO. Funk said:
NetFlix, Prime et al really are more than most will ever need to be honest. Last night I watched an episode of The Grand Tour (Columbia Part 2) for an hour or so followed by episode 1 of Sex Education on NetFlix after a recommendation at work (very good, enjoyed it and will keep watching the series) and then finally the latest instalment of Leo's "Tally Ho" cutter restoration, Cleetus McFarland's Corvette engine tear-down and the latest Hoovie's Garage all on YouTube.

YouTube really is great for car content. I watched an E46 330Ci underside restoration from Redish Automotive last night. Girlfriend hates it, but I have to suffer through her Love Island spinoffs so we're even.Yes, it was a lazy evening! She watches US news clips all day as its "better than a soap opera"! I honestly don't remember that last time I visited and there wasn't CNN streaming on her TV.
She also took to a tablet really well and it's always in her hand. That said she claims to be confused by her ancient android phone even those it's essentially a small tablet!

The point I was making was that the previous tenants most probably watched live TV but decided they didn't want to pay licence fee so filled in the online form saying they didn't need a licence. So can everybody who doesn't pay the licence hand on heart say they watch nothing live?
I've been legally LLF for the last 8 years. Never needed to plug in an aerial either as I used to view iPlayer on my laptop. All I ever watched on it (until the 2016 legislation change) was TG and the 6 Nations.
I can manage without the latter and the former is history. There is plenty of content I can legally consume without having to fund the state broadcaster.
If it wants to send me some free emergency toilet paper every month, via its sub-contracted private company, reminding me of the legislation (I already know it, thanks) I'll take it.
There is no need (nor any requirement) for me to respond to their spurious threats and assumptions of criminality.
It's a house of cards and the funding model is not fit for the 21st century.
As a couple of people such as Funk have mentioned, the professional or semi-professional content of YouTube is amazing once you start finding it.
Even just the car related content is vast.
Hoovies Garage (as mentioned is great)
Jay Leno’s Garage
Hoonigans (they have several different channels for different things)
There’s some amazing content as well from the UK. Robert Llewellyn of Scarpheap Challenge has a very good, professionally produced series on YouTube called ‘Fully Charged’, which is a brilliant program about all things electric vehicle. Vehicle conversions, the tech, all that kind of thing.
Fully Charged has had 51 Million views so far, which is quite amazing really.

While you're at it, could you let the Police know you don't need a shotgun licence and tell Apple you're a Windows user and don't need MacOS?
Perhaps it might also be worth letting Ferarri know you don't own one so you won't need any servicing done. I'm sure you'd be fine with any of these companies popping round to check you're not lying of course... All you've done is kept yourself identifed to Capita and updated their database for them.
To everyone else: if you're legally licence-free then ZERO contact is the best advice. You don't have to cough up your details to Capita at all.

I've noticed that TVL systems are pretty shambolic. For instance, if Mrs V. has paid last year, but I pay this year there is enough of a outrage in their systems that Mrs V. will start getting letters for not paying the TVL, despite us holding a new Licence under my name. I admit that I could be co-operative and click on renew... The other thing that annoys me (much like car VED) is that they gouge the first months payment.

I don't want to pay but what stops them taking a photo of my obnoxiously large TV playing eastenders from the street? I don't fancy living with closed curtains all my life
?The choice is a simple one for many.... if you watch live broadcasts - pay up..... if you choose not to watch live broadcasts - don't pay.
Curtains closed or open, if you are abiding by the rules, one shouldn't have to worry about TVL goons. Just don't engage with them.

If you are legally watching things without needing a licence, you shouldn't need to worry. If you are watching live broadcasts, pay up.
It's a shame that some people feel they need a licence just to cover themselves. We don't need one as we don't watch anything broadcast live. The letters we are receiving now are quite threatening though. They want you to pay up even if you don't need to.

If you're watching/recording live TV or using iPlayer then you must buy a licence.Just make sure it's on catch up, not live.
If you want to watch planet earth etc BBC content it's available on Prime/Netflix so foook the BBC.
