M25 and M1 Cameras

Hi All,

I’ve just had a message from a friend of mine who is a PC in the Met.

She has said that from tonight the cameras on the M25 and M1 go live above 70mph, with automatic tickets issued.

No doubt i’ll get flamed, but thought I’d pass it on anyway in case it helps anyone.

Can't hurt to mention it mate.

I've seen the M25 cameras flash when the signs aren't on but I only assumed that was from excessive speed. 100mph+ maybe?

Also saw this on a Facebook group. Someone questioned it and got this response.

Previously, they were only live when there was a variable speed limit in force, you will be happy to know that they are now permanently live. The Government's 2016 report on road casualties stated that speed accounts for 3% of accidents on motorways but assure us that this is not a money making exercise.

Saw this myself on Facebook tonight.

It's been like this on the M4 for a while now. People were quick to disregard it, but soon found out that it was the real deal. 79 mph will get you flashed.

Not sure if the dates are correct for the M1 & M25 cameras, but it is happening in other parts of the country, so beware.

Of course if you speed past the gantries which don't have cameras on, they're not going to flash at you. You slowed down for the ones that did have cameras and they didn't flash either. So I'm not sure you can call this 'fake news' from your experiment.

I always only ever do 70mph through these sections. And then the slower speeds when the gantries have them displayed. Just not worth the risk.

This is inaccurate, the cameras between junction 10 and 15 on the M25 do not change with the variable speed limit. They do not snap you unless you are doing 80mph plus, (I can’t confirm what speed they’re set to) regardless if there is a variable speed limit in place or not.

The issue is cameras operate in a binary manner, so if you drive at 69mph and drift into trigger territory you're getting fined. I can fully understand why people drive much slower than the speed limit and am wondering about driving even slower on motorways myself. 45mph would probably a good speed and using the mindset that driving slower gets you there quicker I'll probably reduce my journey times to when I used to cruise along at 90.
