A top Derbyshire cop has recently stated the same, live at all times.
yes I read about it a week or so ago in the local press, I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later.
And he was a right sanctimonious prick about it too. ‘Safety this, speed kills that’. Because, yeah, people slamming their brakes on on the motorway is properly safe!

For those that might not be aware, it's not just the top gantry cameras you have to really worry about anymore, it's the new HADEC 3 cameras that are mounted to the side of the gantries, usually on gantries that have no top cameras. They are permanently live...

The little buggers are all the way around the M25. Here's how they work...

So what happens if you speed through in lane 3/4 and a lorry passes by the camera at the same time?

Yes, some of them are live when a variable limit isn't being displayed and this has always been the case. Some drivers still don't seem to realise that.

No, they are not set to dish out NIPs at 71, 72, 73, 74 or even 75 mph. Some might be set for the normal threshold of 79mph but the majority are set much higher than that. If you don't believe that, go off and search for some proof of a NIP being issues from a HADECS3 for a speed below 79.

Over the years there have been quite a few of these hoax reports. I suppose they could be deliberate hoaxes from the Police or road safety groups, but I suspect most of them are just Chinese whispers which spread via email and social media and become distorted 'facts'.

No doubt the next time I'm on the M25 I'm going to see some dimwit braking hard from 80mph under a gantry because they've read one of these warning posts. rolleyes

This.

HADECS 3 on the M25 have been on for sometime.

Someone somewhere with too much time on their hands has taken the ‘1mph idiot cop comment’ and tied in with the cameras to create some fake news! rolleyes

There was a camera flashing busily on the newly opened up stretch of M1 around Northampton yesterday evening - I think it may have got me! I was doing about 80 and there was no reduced speed limit operating.

This is common when SMART sections are becoming live. It's either something to do with testing/calibration or it's just set lower to warn motorists the cameras are becoming operational. Happened on the M25 and M3 when the HADECS3s were first installed.

If you were doing 80 and there was no VSL, I wouldn't worry about it.

I wish I'd seen this thread before my m25 / m1 jaunt to leics this weekend.

I was looking out for specs3 besides the road, but had thought most gantry cameras were off (those that aren't empty of course).

My average speed was 72, and whilst driving with purpose, it was quite safe to do on a clear, dry sunday morning.

I wish someone would invent a camera to capture drivers who don't return to an empty left lane though. The treasury would have earned about £20k today from what I saw.

Likewise - I got flashed whilst doing 80 on Friday evening as well.
I'll report back in a couple of weeks to say if I received anything...!

Another confirmation that they're 'live at all speeds' - or scaremongering - it's up to you whether you believe it

I'm a regular round the m25 and up and down the m1. Many cameras have been live for quite some time. But none have done me at 78 on the sat nav.

I'll be back next week to give it a go and will report back!
