On Speedo or sat nav?
Speedo
So your true speed is probably somewhere between 73 and 78, no problem there!
Some speedometers are actually spot on accurate below 100mph, so if his cruise control is set to 80mph based on his speedometer, he could actually be doing 80mph and be 1mph over the 10% + 2mph guideline at 70mph.

The speedometer in My 2001 BMW 330ci reads @ 111mph at 110mph (verified by both sat nav and the Police who pulled Me over). At 70~90mph, it reads exactly the same as the sat nav, so I know it is spot on accurate.

Used the M1 and M25 (Milton Keynes to Enfield) for the first time in a while today and it was the smoothest running I've ever seen it.

Everyone seemed scared of the cameras. Had the cruise control on 74 (Speedo) and hardly got overtaken on the southbound journey.

Not sure if it's down to the cameras, but if so it seems to have made it much better.

Northbound journey was ok as well, although the variable speed limits on the M1 were seemingly completely random, which I know happens often but this was the most random I've ever seen it, swapping between 50, 60, and NSL on almost every gantry.

M25 'SMART' Motorway.

Lane 1 shows 40
Lane 2 shows nothing
Lane 3 shows 50
Lane 4 shows 40.

So whats the speed limit?

That's a good one. Any chance you could post the video or PM me a link to it as I'd be interested to see what it looked like as you approached it and I could also make the numbers look a bit more visible for you.

Video is uploading here: https://youtu.be/UntRoxbZQT4

50% sure this happened on Saturday with 50/60 limits in the same place but will check the footage later. It's still on the sd card somewhere.

I’ll check the GPS data when I’m home but I have a feeling it’s on the lead up to Dartford Tunnel. South side.

Just realised the video was on Private so I've made it Unlisted.

Looks like a faulty gantry, not one with a HADECS3 camera but it does raise some questions.

If it were a gantry with a camera, I would think any NIPs issued could be challenged.

It does show how un-SMART these sections of motorway can be.

Yet the people in charge of them and who work on them say stuff like this shouldn’t happen. Just the same as the limits don’t change by more than 10mph on the gantry. Tempted to email highways and ask what they’re doing about it.

I've owned over 50 cars and tested the accuracy of the speedo on most of them; I'm yet to find an accurate one! They all build in a 1-4% idiots' margin it seems.

I've got a slightly better image out of the video:

On the subject of speedometer accuracy, my BMW's speedo as it comes from the factory was 3-4mph out at most, but I've coded it to display true speed (with a Carly) and that's probably possible to do on most modern cars with a coding tool.

I managed to get this out of the other video.

Above 50 my speed under reads by 2mph according to Waze and the GPS in the camera. I usually set cruise to 51/62 or 72 depending on limit shown.

I've emailed Highways England to ask why a gantry would be showing 2 different speed limits (without proof) and I expect to be told it's impossible and then I'll reply with the images and videos backing up what I saw.

You would think these gantries (or the software controlling them) would have been designed so it's impossible to display different speed limits on adjacent signs, wouldn't you?

Another reason to have a dashcam, as you've shown very nicely. clap

Good point, my mates 2008 E90 3 Series speedo over reads by a good chunk, at 80mph on the speedo it was saying about 73-74 on the GPS. I expected my E46 to be about the same but I've found the same as you, it's pretty much bang on at legal speeds.

More likely all the same dicks who keep sharing the post on FB about how we're all going to get done for 71mph.

Email them call them and pester them, this shouldn’t happen and they (HE) should get it fixed!! Their logs should show what it’s displaying!!

Thanks, I do moan at them as well, as if it’s wrong and left like that it erodes the usefulness of them and creates confusion.
