You don't get that paperwork, the registered keeper has to fill it in and send it back with your details. You'll get yours as a separate notice once they've got your details.

What am I missing here? To me:

That NIP said:
The alleged offence carries a maximum fine of £1000.......blah blah...... and a driving licence endorsement of 6 penalty points or disqualification.....blah blah.....
So yes, you could be fined £1k and get 6 points but that's the maximum, surely it'll be the standard £100/3pts (or a course)?
You’re not missing anything. This is correct.

To be fair, that's the lowest speed I've ever seen anyone get a ticket for
The current lowest at that location I've got recorded against my fleet is 28mph,

Not taking the course or FPN, going to court and making a very poor impression upon the magistrate/judge.

Is one way, I'd imagine.

It isn’t. Same penalty at 80 mph. I’ve explained this more than once. Patience exhausted. I’m out.

The offence is exceeding the 20mph limit contrary to blah blah blah. The maximum fine and points relates to this.

The circumstances of how you committed the offence aren’t related to what the maximum is.

Well I never...I am doing an awareness course on Saturday (well actually I think it was the Mrs but neither of us can pinpoint who was driving so I am taking the hit) However unbelievably it is for doing 26 in a 20 at the exact same camera ..... which is rather annoying as I generally have a queue of impatient cars trailing behind me going up and down that hill mad

You can add me to that now.

The maximum penalty for speeding is the same regardless of the limit and the amount of the excess. That's why it's the maximum.

The alleged offence is given in bold on line 4 of your letter, it is "Exceed a 20 mph speed limit" not "drive at 26 mph in a 20mph speed limit".

If you had driven at 80mph the penalty would be different but it still wouldn't exceed the maximum (assuming it was still dealt with as speeding).

It's pretty straightforward. The keeper sends back that form nominating you as the driver. You then get a letter inviting you to take a course or pay £100 and get 3 points unless you want to have your day in court.

I hope the keeper is replying to the letter and not forwarding it to you, as that would be bad news (for them).

Yes, the maximum penalty for the speeding offence remains the same. They may however choose to charge you with a different offence such as dangerous driving, which of course carries a different maximum penalty.

For that offence. Yes.

However, you might also be charged with another offence, such as Dangerous Driving, which carries a more severe penalty.

Sorry if I didn't explain very well, the letter sent to the registered keeper is nothing to do with you at this point. Its a request to them for the details of who was driving with a general explanation of the maximum potential penalties for the offence of speeding in a 20. Its not an offer of points to anyone.
There is no reason for you to need to see this letter. You will be sent your own letter with an offer in due time which is pertinent to your specific (alleged) offence. As others have said, you'll probably get a choice of a course or 3 points.
Hope this is helps explain.

I know that camera well. To put it near to the bottom of the hill is a little bit...well you know.

I thought 20 limits weren't 'enforceable', or have I been listening to pub chat too much?
My understanding is that 20mph limits are supposed to be 'self enforcing' - IE it is difficult to do more than 20 driving sensibly, or temporary limits around school start/finishing times, so similar.
You are perhaps confusing 20 mph limits and 20 mph zones. Limits can be enforced, zones should be self enforcing.

Cat
Entirely possible, I was discussing a proposed 20MPH limit/zone and the Police were reluctant to support it as they wouldn't be inclined to police it, so probably a zone. Thanks.

No, because as it says in the letter the penalty for speeding consists of fine and points, or disqualification at the discretion of the court. Which of course isn't going to happen for 26 in a 20.

Could be linked with the awful accident not so long ago - not that speed was the issue - ironically HGV lorries still use it on a regular basis and ignore the signs so the camera deosn't deter them seemingly.
