I got given a 1 year old Galaxy S8 which was rolled back to a factory reset, I have replaced my S7 with it. I typically turn the phone on flight mode overnight to stop calls waking me up and just saving battery power. I have noticed that if I switch it on flight mode between 10:30pm and 7am it's still using around 11% of the battery, which is far higher than my S7 did.

I have installed package disabler pro and disabled all the bloatware plus a few other bits like bixby etc but it's still using far more than it should. Any thoughts?

Thanks smile

Look at your battery usage stats,it will show you which apps are using the most....google services is often a culprit or Ebay or Facebook.
Could be as simple as uninstalling and reinstalling the particular app

Thanks. I've had a look on there and there's nothing that stands out in particular, at the moment the most usage is from Android system and the screen as well as device idle, the apps that are near the top are minimal (google inbox and swiftkey). I've turned the screen to quite dim and also use Twilight (blue filter and also dims the screen....had this on my last phone and it didn't use much battery at all).

I've just disabled a few others I don't use such as the google app; I think I'll charge it before going to bed, then check the apps etc in the morning. Because 11% overnight is a crazy amount in my opinion! I have just gone for a SIM only contract and generally the batteries are the weakest links so if I can charge it every 1.5-2days rather than every day it'll help in the long run.

Many thanks, will keep you posted.

Have you tried the "do not disturb" function instead of Flight mode.

As mentioned, the battery app built into the phone will tell you what is going on and what's going on. Hopefully this might be a one off - you say the device was reset, so it may well be background services like indexing that take place when a phone is fresh.

I will say though this is one of the reasons that drove me nuts about android - rogue apps clawing battery life. iPhones certainly aren't perfect, the youtube app last year gained infamy for chewing through battery life for no reason after an update, but they do tend to be a bit more predictable. When I had my Galaxy S8 last year, I could never get a full day out of the battery.

I'm getting more than a day out of it, it's now sat at 55% after 17 hours, but it's not been used a great deal. The bugging thing is what's being used overnight. I swear my S7 in flight mode only went down around 3% overnight, I can accept that, but clearly something is draining the battery and I can't work out what. Package Disabler has disabled a lot of apps/processes and still not a great deal of difference. I've disabled a few more this morning that I don't use so will see if it's any different tonight.

I believe changing the batteries in these things is quite an involved job, and it doesn't need doing now but where I'm on a SIM only deal now (£7/month for 2GB data, unlimited calls/texts) I want to make the phone last as long as possible as I was paying £47/month! If this phone can last 2 more years (so it'll be around 3 years old) then I've saved almost £1k....!

Maybe just the Android system itself uses a lot of battery; I may try the high power saving mode which I think disables a load of apps as well and see what that can do overnight.

If you put it in flight mode, why not switch it off?

Good question, but I use the alarm function which doesn't work when the phone is off unfortunately. Phones from years ago used to!

Bugger. I'd assumed they would do!

Bit annoying isn't it, otherwise yes, I'd switch it off. I'm not sure whether it's different for some reason overnight, or whether the battery percentage seems to drain quicker from when it's fully charged, but it's not been used a huge amount today (work been manic!!) as it's now still on 48% after 23 hours since being unplugged.....which seems perfectly reasonable to me. It will be interesting to see if it drops a large amount this evening as well.

Anyone else who has an S8 find the battery drops a large percentage overnight? What sort do you typically see?

Thanks

The alarm function still works in do not disturb mode. Perhaps you need to uninstall a lot of what you have put on it and do a factory reset.

Do not disturb mode uses more battery than flight mode, since it's still accepting signal. I did a factory reset when I got given it and have also uninstalled a lot of stuff and there's not a huge amount on here. Still used a lot overnight, was on 41% at around 10pm and about 29% after 7am or so. Weird. Maybe just the android system?

My HTC 10 uses a lot overnight so I use Tasker to turn off the wifi. That improved things no end.

I was using flight mode but decided I'd rather be contactable in an emergency.

There's no need to use twilight - the phone has a built in blue light filter.
Do you have an 'always on display' switched on?
Also, have you done the 'app power monitor' button in device maintenance to put any power draining apps to sleep?

Always on display is switched off. I used twilight on my S7 and it uses such a small amount of the battery I'm not fussed about it (plus the fact my last phone seemed better on standby suggests it's not twilight).

I think it's just "android system" to be honest! Never mind. Still getting around 36 hours or more. Now on 60% after 19 hours and seems like I've done all I can do to minimise usage. Just seems to use more overnight (on standby effectively) than I'd have expected.

I'm sure if you wire it up to one of these it will be fine.

Delete or disable google+ and any otner google movies/media/etc apps.

My note 3 was losing 4% battery an hour when not used/over night which is huge.

After the above it went down to less than 1% an hour.

So get rid of tne google crap.
