If people didn't smoke in their work vans then the police could concentrate on something worthwhile.

They don't get the money as it happens. They have just spent some funds on sorting people who simply can't do as they should then moan when caught.

Perhaps the government could ring-fence such fines to discount how much it costs council tax payers to police those who refuse to be regulated for their own good.

No smoking signs have been compulsory in company owned vehicles for about 10 years. I agree a police operation is a bit OTT but not having them is crazy. A £200 fine for the sake of a 15p sticker.

Here's 10 for £1.39 inc postage!!!!

Maybe they're also using this particular purge to find other things wrong with the vans? While copper no1 is dealing with the sticker (or lack of), copper no2 is checking tax, insurance, mot, tachometer, etc.

So why wasn't there a sticker in your van? Max £1,000 fine, so your employer got off lightly.

Lemme guess - people smoke in it? £200 fine for the smoker, up to £2,500 for the employer.

Nothing's changed particularly since 2007, so there's not much excuse other than laziness or entitlement.

Seatbelts, smell of booze or dope, tyres, maybe a quick look for nicked powertools...

Are those a legal sign in accordance with the law? Are words required as well?

Wasn’t smoking in the van and 99% of the time I drive it, neither of us smoke, Yes I should have know the law and yes I have ordered stickers and yes I was wrong not getting stickers, but I cannot believe that all your here about is police not having enough resources to deal with all the crime yet then can set up an operation to catch vans without the no smoking stickers, that was my point, it is hardly the worst offence is it, no sticker £200 fine reduced to £150 if paid in 14 days, smoking in van £50 reduced to £30 if paid in 30 days, which is worst

Was it just for 'no smoking' stickers? That sounds odd and I wasn't aware the police could issue FPNs for it.

Or was it a multi-agency ANPR-type thing?

Secondly, who was the lead? Was there external funding from another agency etc?

Doesn't matter who's driving it. You might have a get-out if you were the only person who EVER travelled in it in the course of their employment, which you clearly aren't.

No reason not to have one, then.

You forget one major difference.
Sticker fine = employer's problem.
Smoking fine = employee's problem.

So what other employment legislation are you not following...?

And wouldn't you be happy if they stopped somebody who turned out to be the bloke who nicked your tools from your van last month?

Don't blame the copper, this is pressure from above, right at the top, using them as stealth tax collectors, put the blame where it belongs.

The ban on smoking in cars with under 18's on board has been pretty much ignored by Police - apparently not the case with van stickers

I will leave this now, obviously, speed kills, get caught normally £100 fine, not having a sticker must cause the same deaths as mobile phones £200 fine, we are a small company with four people in total and we have only been trading two years my previous employment before starting this company was as a health and safety manager, when the legislation first came in I ensured that the company I worked for was compliant, to be honest 10years later I forgot about the need for stickers as obviously did the previous owners of the van (very large company)
I will state for one last time I know I was wrong but cannot believe that the police use their resources to check for stickers, I also think the fine is disproportionate with the crime

Could be TfL.

TfL fund a number of coppers to help 'keep London's streets moving'. They patrol in marked and unmarked Mitsubishi Shoguns and being Dagenham and the A13 is prime territory for them.

TfL are well known for enforcing so called petty rules and regulations and,as I said earlier, could be used as a pretext to uncover more serious motoring offences.

The aroma of cannabis swirls around the A13 in the rush hours. Plod will be sniffing, "pro-active policing".

Van and driver totally legal apart from a no smoking sticker, don’t mind being stopped and checked but £200 for a missing sticker ??????
