Looking for any recommendations for a solicitor (preferably in the Herts/Beds/Bucks or London area) to help me with unsatisfactory engine recondition work.

High level summary

RRS engine failure sent to an a firm (to remain anonymous, for the moment) that deals only in reconditioning engines in Nov 17.
Advised that it will take up to 6 weeks to complete
Didn't get it back until March 18, almost 6 months later. Was advised there was an electrical fault remaining, but as it had been so long I told them to send it back and I would get that sorted.
It was delivered back but car was in reduced performance mode.
Advised by my mechanic that the trouble codes relating to air flow sensing. We didn't think the flow sensors were faulty but we swapped them out for 2 new ones anyway which didn't change the situation so we have swapped them back.

The engine runs badly and misfires. There is evidence of oil having been blown back up the air intake against one of the air flow sensors. It is currently in reduced performance mode. The car wont drive an more than a few meters. You can hear a misfire and associated intake noise similar to what you would hear if a valve wasn't closing correctly, as if it had been bent or a valve spring had broken.

Its possible one of the cams was out of time and a valve has been slightly bent during assembly if the engine had been turned as you would, while assembling it.

returned it back to the firm in March 18 , who now are managing it under warranty (although I hadn't had the vehicle returned usable in the first place) and they still maintain it is an electrical fault that they don't deal with.

So several thousand pound later and in May 18 I don't have the car back or working!!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Although i cannot recommend a solicitor, by RRS do you mean Range Rover Sport?
I only ask, as the symptoms sound very similar to what i experience when i had engine work carried out.

Ended up that all the injectors and fuel pumps were replaced to resolve this issue.

However, this is only if you have a 5.0l engine.

The inlet manifolds are prone to failing on these. The seam where the two halves are bonded together can fail which means air escapes from there, which subsequently brings up mass air flow sensor faults.

Could be a range of problems, but I've changed a dozen myself before and the hissing sound you mention is a symptom of this.

Let us know how you get on.

If the value of what you’re claiming is under £10k, it’ll be dealt with in the Small Claims Track. It won’t matter if you win or lose, you’ll still be responsible for your own costs.

No the OP wants his money back not save money on filing his claim in court
When I said the case was straight faward I meant for any solicitor not a DIY claim that could fail

Did you pay by card? If yes, can you do a chargeback?

I suspect that's going to be your showstopper.

What was wrong with it (the engine failure)?
