Spotted tonight fitted to lamp posts close to a digital speed read out - small boxes in yellow, with a speed camera logo on them and what appears to be a flash unit on the top.

Are they really cameras? I've not seen anything in the media about them and doubt they're 'approved'. I'd be interested to know more about them.

Yes, they are. Sneakily put up on 1 May without telling anybody - I work at LHR and we got a notice 12 hours after the cameras went live, from Landside Ops - probably can't share it, but the gist of it is that the new tiny cameras are speed cameras first, ANPR cameras second, and security cameras last. Good to see the airport police have their priorities in order.

The cameras are individual speed cameras as well as being able to measure average speed too. When we asked if the cameras differentiated for vehicles or caught security risks, we were simply told "The easiest way to not come to notice of the cameras is to obey the speed limit."

Edit: the same cameras have been used airside for a while now, LHR have just decided to put them landside too because the general public speed too much and don't pose any security risk to the busiest airport in Europe.

I haven’t spotted them yet, I would imagine they will be kept busy. If you drive The northern perimeter road you will be hard pushed to find anyone sticking to the 30.

The Southern is 40mph, which again nobody sticks to. I would have thought the multiple airside entries would be of more importance to the police than cabs and passengers speeding to the terminal to catch their flight.

Never mind, they know best, obviously airline terrorism has been quashed at Heathrow forever, if they're now focusing purely on speeding.

As a worker at Heathrow I was sent the notice too. I thought it was a wind up due to the awful spelling.

The don't want people driving in a careless manor.

I've not seen the cameras yet but they seem to be installing them in car parks too!

That speeding fine in the post is well and truly going to scare off any potential terrorists now isnt it?

Been the talk of the office this morning (before finding this thread) and there are at least 2 on the northern peri road, one facing eastbound traffic near Compass Centre, and there is one facing westbound opposite the Renaissance Hotel. Seems there may also be one near the T5/western peri road.

Edit:
There's 2 on the southern peri as well, not sure which direction of travel, but one on west of Hatton Cross and another some where west of Cargo.

Passed 3 yesterday on the northern perimeter road. They are place 10 meters or so after the digital speed readouts. Tiny things on lamp posts with camera signs on the same post. Not exactly visible, obvious or warned about.

I hit the first one by T5 and the digital readout was 35.... camera just after that probably nabbed me at something like that speed. I eased off the gas but it was downhill so I doubt my speed would have changed much in 10m.

Explains why all the Menzies drivers of the staff buses are crawling along now.........I guess they must have been pre-warned about it.
As if the last thing we all need is it taking even longer to get to work rolleyes

I read it that the second line is a quote from the poorly written notice.

I noticed these as well, as others have said they aren't particularly obvious. Do they meet the relevant regulations to issue speeding fines? Or are they just looking to deter people? I know out local neighbourhood busybodies like to go out with a speed camera and then send letters to those who they consider to be speeding excessively - could this be something similar?

We're now wondering if they are targeting staff only rather than 'joe public' especially, as they have appeared in the staff car parks as well, and the car park entry is now all linked to your pass ID, and we've all had to submit vehicle details associated with pass ID when that came into being.
LHR specific and contractor etc vehicles will all be known as well, so again, targets people driving around the site for work.

So they are cameras then I’d love to see the Home Office approval documentation......

Well, stopping people from doing 35 in a 30 is obviously FAR more important than stopping people from blowing up planes you horrible horrible car driving people. Think of how many kittens you are killing EVERY day.

Can someone point me in the direction of the notice stating that Heathrow are stopping security checks and diverting all resources into trapping staff for speeding?

Thought not.

This will only be a staff / employment matter too and not an issue for Joe Public.
