a leased AMG trim A class. .
1. How did you know her car was leased?
2. Why was it necessary to state it was in AMG trim? So what?

Here in Birmingham, where stopping when the lights go red seems optional, the OPs approach would have them involved in a major crash with their first ten minutes of driving anywhere.

Do people really get beeped at for not going on amber? I don't drive in London a great deal but have done a few trips recently and have never noticed
It has never happened to me in almost 40 years of driving.

I used to be a Driving Instructor working in London. It used to happen even in a fully liveried car. (it still does. I've seen it happen)

[PEDANT]Only if you pass the stop line whilst the light is on amber - It's not illegal to move forward on an amber light if you do not pass the stop line.[/PEDANT]

Fair enough.

But importantly, what would you teach your learners when faced with a beeping driver behind?

Hopefully not to floor it on amber.

This. I see it on a daily basis (literally) and it isn't just marginal with amber just going red. It will be red for a few seconds and traffic continues to drive through. I have even seen a car stop at red and the car behind has puled out and driven round them and through the lights.

Further Pedantry the light sequence is RED, RED and AMBER, GREEN so you should not set off (for it is that which we are discussing) until GREEN as the RED is still lit.

It should wait until it is green.

Is that a serious question? What would a qualified Instructor tell a learner to do? Ignore them, of course. Just to re enforce what it can be like, a colleague of mine had a learner in the car, who happened to stall at a green light.

The driver behind got out armed with a crook lock and threatened to wrap it around his neck if he didn't go at the next green light.

I'll bet that made your learner much calmer and less likely to stall next time.

How do these permanently angry people get through the day without heart attacks?

Not my learner, but a Colleague's. He said that he was a good driver and just a few weeks away from his test. He gave up driving that day.

2) who cares what car it is

3) how do you know it's leased

4) you just commited criminal damage.

Sorry, yes should have read your post more carefully!
In spite of the zen like calm which I try to maintain while driving, I would have been quite angry had I been in your colleague's shoes. I hope the learner gets his confidence back and gives it another try some time later.

No. You may move forward, or set off, on red or red and amber, as long as you do not cross the stop line before green is lit.

Have I really been doing it wrong this entire time?? I must have been doing it around police cars at some point, and have gone through MANY red light cameras without any issue.
Several years ago I got a cyclist prosecuted for being a tt like that,

The cyclist hit my wife as she was crossing the road with me. I 'encouraged' the cyclist who was trying to make their exit to speak to some police who were fortunately nearby on the other side of the road.

The cyclist told the police that they had gone through an amber light and not a red light so what was the problem. The police officer (in that classic way they do) simply said "have you not read the Highway Code so you know that amber means stop".

Fast forward to the moron cyclist getting a substantial fine (iirc it was around £400).

Then, you must not pass the light.
