Absolutely. E-bikes have to be pedal-assisted. Use an electric bike that is not powered by pedals (and assisted by a battery) is 6 points, for unregistered vehicle, and no insurance. Sellers are still advertising without making all this clear to buyers.

And only 250 watt and only powered up to 15.5 mph (25 kph)

Now, this has got me interested in getting back on a bike. I have a full A licence, I may start looking for a fully legal bike to register, tax, licence and charge at home.

Why not just get a bike ?

You'll get fitter without the electronic tomfoolery.

Unless the battery runs out midway through your ride and then you'll find out what a heavy PITA e-bikes can be.

A mate had one. It was a piece of ( expensive) junk and he still struggled to keep up.

No, I am talking about an electric motorcycle, with a decent e-range, such as

With a bit of respect ✊ to you, I don’ t think that experience is typical.

For bikes produced since 2016, yes. Before 2016, no.

Well, to be fair there have been a couple of instances when, faced with a strong headwind, I have been blowing out of my arse and some mush dressed in office atire (shirt and tie, etc) has gone sailing past me on an ebike.

The e-bike even had a basket on the front !

Almost gave myself a coronary trying to catch him/ keep up even with the benefit of a slipstream biggrin

Generally though, I consider ebikes cheating smile

Oh God, here we go.

Er, let me think ...The penguins and the polar bears are being robbed of their natural habitat.

Ebikes need to be recharged and use the planet's valuable natural resources.

Want a bike ? Get pedalling.

£15k ( after a grant ).

How long do the batteries last (In years, not how much range do you get) and what is the cost to replace ?

I agree it's a nice looking bike but you could get something rather special ( petrol powered ) for that money.

Yes I was recently in full TT mode on a wide canal towpath (in Belgium), smashing along in full training mode, and this chap sailed past me on a mountain bike frame, with a suit on. Must have been going 40kph easy. He didn’t look as though he need an e bike.

Generally though I see the attraction, particularly if you live in a hilly area.

If you're talking about the e-bicycle type, not the e-motorcycle type, won't it need to be 'type approved' before it can be registered? and looking at them, I don't think they'll pass that.

There is a chap with a YouTube channel getting a powerful DIT built e-bike ready for MSVA, so he can ride it legally, but before he has finished, he continues to ride it illegally, and as I don't think he has a motorcycle licence, won't be riding it legally if it gets through approval anyway.
He's put a lot of effort in though. And it really flies along.
