Thanks to S100HP for the nudge - and it's true, there is snow on Cairngorm!

The title has never been more apt... During the day it's become clear that ex-Hurricane Lorenzo will reach a point west of Northern Ireland on Thursday night and then turn sharply and aim at the Midlands. This is caused by a high pressure block between Scandinavia and Greenland.

Charts show it will rapidly lose power as it heads east - but not sure on rainfall levels at this point.

My predictions with absolutely NO knowledge, scientific or otherwise about this winters weather are;

That overall it is going to be a mild, wet and blowy one.

[edit]

Pug, how does this start date compare to previous years?

Earliest UK snow falls, not thread opening wink

2018 - Sept 20th
2017 - Sept 14th (thread opened earlier than that due to a big storm)
2016 - Oct 17th (after a false start of thread)
2015 - Oct 23rd (another false start!)

I had to de-ice the windscreen in Chesterfield earlier this morning.

Mine was fine this morning - but had to de-ice yesterday.

1 degree this morning, heated seat, steering wheel and screens in operation.
Seems central Scotland didn’t get the clear screens before driving off memo, quite a few cars driving with barely anything cleared.

Yet the sun is out so hopefully will warm up a touch.

First windscreen frost of the year, close to gritting temps on high ground round our way. We didn't go out but Calderdale did next door.

IN. I had the adenoidal PH voice in my head as I left the house this morning:

"IT'S SIX DEGREES. WINTER TYRE TIME".

This year I've been foolish enough to buy some. Will I need them? Probably not. hehe

Predicted track of Lorenzo shows it straight over the top of me. But forecast says bit of rain, little wind.

I would trust the man made images I posted over a computerised single-model forecast.

It does look like it loses power rapidly as it turns east. I maintain rain may be far more of an issue than wind.

My boss will be trying to fly home from Dublin on Thursday night hehe

Always thought winter tyres were too much expense and way to much bother
[ 4 extra wheels ? where to store them in my wee flat ? ] we don't have 6 month winters
like Canada or Norway.

However, my knees are playing up, a sure fire indication we are in for a long, cold winter, so
reliable tyres might come in very handy

After spending the most money I've ever spent outside of car modifications, cars and actual houses - I can't wait to use our new boiler in anger this winter.

Also got the log burner all sorted to match HETAS requirements too.

Bring it on.
