In the past I have simple ignored these letters where its clear of mistaken identity, what is the risk of being ignoring these initial letters nowadays ?

It may be clear to the recipient, but not to the PPC.
Some are VERY litigious, for their pound of flesh.
In all cases the best advice is NOT to ignore, and ask the chaps on pepipoo or MSE for the best way forward
They also say NEVER NEVER NEVER phone them or state who was driving, not even if it was your dog. either in a subsequent letter or if you are naive enough, a phone call, once they have a name they are worse than a GSD chasing a criminal.
ALWAYS just say you are the registered keeper and are dealing with it as such.

I am fully aware of never naming the driver etc.
I was more wondering if things got as far as litigation, would a PPC actually check the details and call things off or do they blindly carry on to court (and what would a judge think ?) ?

One would expect the facts of the matter to win out. However, not engaging and trying to sort out a wrong thing early in the process won't be helpful to ones case. And it's a bit of a lottery.

We received a country court claim for our vehicle that was registered in May 2015, but the ticket was issued in March.
This is despite me supplying copies of the V5 to both the Parking company, and Gladstone solicitors.

The only time they properly scrutinised the claim was after the submission of my initial defence statement.

It was clear that the court claim was the last step in their debt collection process and they were hoping for a default judgement.

Cover your ass with an initial letter if nothing else.

Just to follow this up we found out our car has been cloned, but now have another issue in that we had a speeding ticket through this morning.
It’s turning into a bit of a nightmare now, ringing various police departments etc.
This may sound silly but what happens if we decide to put a cheap private plate on the car, are we still responsible for the original one?

I think, as long as you've registered your plate as cloned and can prove where you were at any point, there's nothing bad coming your way. The details when you change your vehicle reg go "missing" from the DVLA so they don't show a vehicle. Obviously, your original plate will show as uninsured too so ANPR would be able to pick it up if they pass a copper. I don't know if the Police would be able to trace your private reg through to your original reg and send tickets your way regardless. There's no reason you couldn't buy and register a plate then just never fit it and drive round causing mayhem otherwise.

Belle- ( thinking out loud, and IANAL) , how easy would it be to fit something like a PH sticker in rear window, and then notify local police of possible cloning, and have them take a photo of vehicle ,(with sticker etc) , for "crime prvention issues".

A lad at work recently had his number plates stolen in the middle of the night. Bland 10 year old Audi A3 in Boggo spec. Told the police and they in reponse told him to put a piece of black tape in a certain place on his new number plates so his car could be differentiated from the one that would most likely be driving around with his old ones on. Lo and behold he had a speeding ticket through within a month and that tape saved his bacon.

We have notified and have a crime number, there is also a marker out on the car which means we may get pulled in our area too but that’s life.
We have seen a picture of the other vehicle and the plates on it have no garage name markings, ours do have some so there is a difference. It’s also a different shade of colour to ours.

Did you sort it with the PPC? If not, you could send them the crime reference number and explain that the car was cloned.

Yes they were very good to be fair and cancelled it when they knew it was a cloning issue.
They had the vehicle picture on their website, which we now have a copy of.
