So on my way home late last night over a bridge to a slip road to join a motorway. I noticed x5 police sat on the bridge. Went passed at probably 45 the limit is 40, into a Roundabout and exit on to a slip road. Yeah I did boot it down the slip road up to 80-85 joined motorway couple of lorry’s lane 1 few cars lane 2 probably doing 65 ish so moved to lane 3 still doing 85 speedo.
Out of nowhere see a car from lane 1-3 come zooming up behind me tailgating. Sometimes in this situation I do accelerate if I thing someone is being an idiot but late at night could see it was an X5 from the headlights so I moved over suspected it was that x5 I had just seen. Car came past slowly yep it was the police just as I thought. They dropped back again followed me for 4 miles then pulled me over.
Officer came over asked my name didn’t ask for proof then said ok not to worry we were looking for a silver Saab. Off you go.
Ok
Routine check or were they following me to see if I would go faster on motorway.

Did you write them a note and they felt sorry for you after (trying) to read it?

Couldn't they tell that your car wasn't a silver Saab until they had spoken to you?

The spelling police police have arrived to suggest writing in a coherent manner is unimportant.

I was followed very closely by a police X5 once - it was extreme tailgating and certainly felt like I was being pushed along. Luckily I kept it at 30. It was at night and not apparent that it was a marked car until I pulled over to park. They drew up a few spaces away, no doubt running some checks (M5, late one Friday night with a couple of lads in it) and then took off before I could approach them.

Having suffered a theft earlier this year I’m glad they feel inclined to run spot checks on high risk cars. Even my mum was always getting pulled over driving at night when borrowing my Golf R - but in this particular instance it definitely felt like a bit of a setup due to the tailgating - as if they were willing me to just put my foot down.

When the police pulled OP over - was it a glottal stop?

The officer probably just wanted to make sure you were the keeper/insured. I'd also bet he did the sniff test when you put the window down (booze/weed)

Nothing to worry about, so dont sweat it.

I see what you did there smile

They were probably looking for a particular car (probably not a Saab). Your vehicle matched a rough description but once pulled they could see you weren't the person/people they were after.

Probably just a routine check, I've had a couple over the years, as I work shifts, or used to there's often nothing else on the road when I'm driving so I guess I stand out more. Also once followed by a traffic car which I saw turn around to follow me, I can only guess they did some checks on the reg and were happy because I was waiting for the inevitable and after maybe a minute or so they turned around back the way they were originally going.

I've also had a car stolen in a burglary at night so I don't have an issue with it

All totally routine.
Stopped 1000s of cars over the years for routine checks especially on nights.
Dealt with 1000s of drivers by a quiet word of warning
If you had a licence, insurance, test ,tax hadnt been drinking or were not as high as a kite !! then other infringements could be dealt with as words of advice....if "the attitude test" was passed !

I've no problem with them checking / stopping vehicles that look suspicious, but I do have a problem with the tailgating and them encouraging or trying to entice or bully people into breaking the law. I had that exact same thing with a Peugeot 205 GTi, middle of the night and the police car pulls out from a layby as I pass and then drives right up to the rear bumper on an empty DC and then does the drop back, catch up, tailgate , repeat crap.

I don't think that sort of behavior is acceptable from those supposedly there to set an example.

“I booted it onto the motorway and went straight to lane 3 where i sat doing 85 when some guy came up my chuff and expected me to move out the lane - I didn’t like it”

There’s a little irony here..

As others have said a simple stop and you were selected largely because of how you drove.

You will now argue there was nothing wrong with how you drive and you see worse all the time.

Followed you whilst running your plates, checked the driver name, pulled you over to confirm it wasn't stolen, BECAUSE you were driving it like you stole it?

I moved over as soon as I could. No way they could have seen me boot it down the slip road they would have been turning around to come my way. On the motorway I was in lane 3 overtaking saw the X5 dart from lane 1 to 3 in my rear view and on me quite quick so I put my indicator on to show I will move over when I can. They didn’t overtake straight away so I knew it was the police low and behold when they did pass me it was them.

I found it more strange he didn’t ask me for driving licence, pulled over stopped for maybe 30 secs max then ushered away.

I got pulled once in my E87 coming home from my other half's late one night. Turned left onto a main road and a Hyundai 2 up whipped round, followed me and lit up. Pulled over, dropped the window, the copper took one look at me, asked me my name then told me I was showing no insurance and his computer wasn't working but now it was and all was ok, I was on my merry way.

Later that year, I got pulled over about a mile or 2 away from the last spot on Christmas day coming home after dropping my brother off. They asked me where I'd been and if I'd been drinking, I said no (I had a cider at christmas dinner a good 4-5 hours earlier), he inspected my unopened can of white Monster then sent me on my way.

Both times I was "Yes sir, No sir" so I assume I passed the attitude test and was left to my own devices.

Yep, probably didn't start his answers with 'what it is yeah' or 'basically' which is 9 times out of ten, followed by a pack of lies hehe
