No excuse - it's the 21st C just arrange direct debit & then it's little more than a mouse click when the reminder comes through. Simples surely?

But if you overlook your MoT one year, the DD does not go through the following month and you instead receive a fine, for unpaid VED?

There are many legitimate reasons why renewal of an MoT pass is delayed. It is not right that Big Brother (aka DVLA) should then trick its unsuspecting 'customers' into an excessive fine unless said DVLA have previously pointed out (e.g. by letter) that they (the DVLA) have failed to issue the relevant Direct Debit payment request for that month's VED.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I just realised my car has been untaxed for 5 days and just taxed it online upon realising. I thought I was paying it by direct debit and with everything going on I simply forgot to check until my misses asked if I have taxed the car today!

So going by the above, I shouldn't receive an £80 fine through the door for being 5 days late?

I wouldn't have thought so because you've paid to tax it from the 1st of the month, even if you didn't do it until the 5th.

Thanks chaps. Will report back if something does land through the door but looks like I'll be alright.

There's a handy app for iPhone and Android called Vehicle Smart.

You put details of your car(s) in it and it'll pop up reminders before the tax and MOT are due.
You can also use it to easily check MOT history, including details of any previous advisories/fails etc..

I'm using it to monitor mine and Mrs CnC's cars as well as my niece's and it works well. thumbup

I have a thing called a calendar hanging on my kitchen wall. It's quite useful for writing car MOT dates on as well as other reminders. I'd recommend one.

Make your own tax disc style thing with Tax, insurance MOT and service dates:

I made something similar on a little square card, that fits in the corner of both car's windscreens
